Ascites is caused by a combination of pressure in the veins running through the liver and a decrease in liver function caused by scarring of the liver, i.e., cirrhosis. Ascites is an excessive fluid that accumulates in the abdominal (peritoneal) cavity. It is a complication of cirrhosis and appears as an abdominal bulge
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES DIAGNOSED?
Cirrhotic Ascites may be diagnosed by the doctor on physical examination but is usually confirmed by tests such as ultrasound or CT scan of the abdomen.
