Cirrhosis of the liver is the most common cause of ascites but other conditions such as heart failure, kidney failure, infection or cancer can also cause ascites. Ascites is caused by a combination of pressure in the veins running through the liver and a decrease in liver function caused by scarring of the liver, i.e., cirrhosis. Ascites is an excessive fluid that accumulates in the abdominal (peritoneal) cavity. It is a complication of cirrhosis and appears as an abdominal bulge
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES DIAGNOSED?
Blood tests may be used but it is important to understand the amount of fluid retention. Also, a general physicianmay recommend a paracentesis, a test which analyses the fluid by removing it using a small needle inserted in the abdominal wall under anaesthesia. The analysis of the fluid can help in determining the course of treatment.
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES TREATED?
The Gastroenterologist will prescribe medication tlike spironolactone and furosemide which are basically diuretics. These will help in removing the excess water. Further, a low sodium diet and abstinence from smoking and drinking will be recommended.
