Chikungunya is a virus that is carried by mosquitoes. This can cause acute joint pain and fever as well as fatigue, excessive weakness, headaches and even rashes. The symptoms usually come on within two to three days after being bitten by the infected mosquito.
HOW IS CHIKUNGUNYA DIAGNOSED?
Blood tests can be used to diagnose the condition. Usually the symptoms of joint pain are significant enough and this is also the reason the virus causing chikungunya is classified as Arthritic Virus. The symptoms appear about 3 to 7 days after the mosquito bite. If you have been suffering from constant fever and severe joint pains and if you have recently travelled to any country where chikungunya is found, your GP may suspect this condition and conduct lab tests accordingly.
HOW IS CHIKUNGUNYA TREATED?
There is no specific antiviral drug treatment for chikungunya. Treatment is directed primarily at relieving the symptoms, including the joint pain using anti-pyretics, optimal analgesics and fluids. There is no commercial chikungunya vaccine.
