Chancroid is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that is characterized by open sores in the genitalia. It affects both men and women and is caused by Haemophilus ducreyi bacteria. Symptoms vary in men and women. Symptoms in men are small, red bump on the genitals that may open to a open sore. Ulcers may also form. In women, red bumps are found in the labia. A painful or burning sensation is experienced once the bump opens up. The bumps may break open and leak pus.
HOW IS CHANCROID DIAGNOSED?
The general surgeon or physician will usually extract a sample of the fluid present in the sores which will be studied in a lab test along with urine samples. The lymph nodes will also be examined to check for any pain and swelling.
HOW IS CHANCROID TREATED?
Chancroid may be successfully treated with medication. The infection may clear up without treatment, but medication will help recover and minimize scarring. The medications are antibiotics to kill bacteria that are causing ulcers and to reduce the chance of scarring, surgery to drain a large and painful abscess in the lymph nodes.
