CAROTID ARTERY DISEASE
Also known as the Carotid artery stenosis, the Carotid Artery Disease (CAD) is a disease that is characterized by narrowing of arteries. These carotid arteries basically carry blood to the brain and there are two major carotid arteries on either side of the neck. This narrowing down of carotid arteries can happen due to several reasons, the most common being built-up of cholesterol deposits on the inner walls of the arteries. When there is a complete or partial blockage of the carotid arteries, there is an increased chance of a stroke as there is a reduced blood supply to the brain, another leading cause of deaths all across. There can be sudden numbness, trouble in speaking, dizziness, vision problems, severe headache, numbness or drooping of your face and numbness in your joints.
HOW IS CAROTID ARTERY DISEASE DIAGNOSED?
If you already have coronary artery disease or for any other reason you are at an increased risk for CAD, your general physician will recommend a physical examination along with carotid ultrasound, Head CT scan, Computed Tomography Angiography and MRI along with other such tests to diagnose your condition.
HOW IS CAROTID ARTERY DISEASE TREATED?
The treatment for Carotid artery disease is based on the symptoms of the patient. Medicines prescribed by the health practitioner along with lifestyle modifications will help treat the situation. Surgery is recommended for symptomatic patients who have carotid artery narrowing greater than 70%. Surgery may or may not be of benefit for symptomatic patients whose narrowing is between 50% and 69%.
