A Carbuncle is basically a growth that is filled with pus that is caused due to infection. This abscess is usually found in the skin and also in the follicles of the hair. It can also lead to permanent scars if not treated on time and properly. This is usually a contagious condition.
HOW IS CARBUNCLES DIAGNOSED?
The early sign of carbuncles is appearance of red, painful bumps on the skin. The carbuncles fill in with pus and they give an appearance of white or yellow tips that ooze. Along with the appearance of the boils, the symptoms include fever, fatigue and a general feeling of sickness. There can be swelling too in the nearby tissue or lymph nodes, especially in the neck, armpit or groin area.
HOW IS CARBUNCLES TREATED?
It is important to avoid squeezing the carbuncle as this will spread the infection. A general physician will recommend using a warm compress to drain the pus and promote healing. Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help in dealing with the pain.
