Candidiasis is a fungal infection typically on the skin or mucous membranes caused by candida. It often causes a red, itchy rash to form, most commonly in the folds of the skin. This rash may also spread to other areas of the body. In some cases, the infection can cause the skin to become cracked and sore. Blisters and pustules may also occur.
HOW IS CANDIDIASIS DIAGNOSED?
A physical exam or even a skin culture can help in finding the cause and diagnosing the issue. During the skin culture, the general physician may swab the affected area with a cotton ball in order to collect a sample which can be studied in the laboratory.
HOW IS CANDIDIASIS TREATED?
Oral candidiasis will be treated by the general physician, mainly with antifungal medicine (pills or mouth wash) to kills fungi. If the case is severe, Intra venous antifungal drugs will have to be given. Genital candidiasis will be treated with antifungal tropical creams or suppositories. Some physicians will also prescribe a single dose of fluconazole for patients who are having the condition for the first time in their life. However it is very important to make the exact diagnosis before giving treatments on suspected basis. If someone is having recurrent infections of candidiasis, drug type and dosage will change accordingly. Prebiotics supplements and food like yoghurt will help in the prevention. Diaper rash in babies will be treated most of the time with anti fungal in the form of creams, oils or powder which should be applied on the affected area. Blood candidiasis will be treated with oral or intra venous antifungal drugs for several days- weeks until the fully recovery.
