Cancer pain is caused by the tumor pressing against bones or nerves or other organs of your body. In some cases the pain maybe due to cancer treatment. It can be acute – damage caused by an injury, or chronic – caused by damage to nerves. Cancer pain may be nerve pain, bone pain, tissue pain or phantom pain. Symptoms are burning pain, inflammation or irritation, dull or sharp pain.
HOW IS CANCER PAIN DIAGNOSED?
The health care practitioner will perform a physical examination and ask questions related to pain for identifying the cause, which are:
• Where does it hurt?
• When does the pain stop and start?
• How long has it been there?
• How intense is the pain?
• What does the pain feel like, in your own words?
HOW IS CANCER PAIN TREATED?
The oncologist will ask you about the intensity of the pain and prescribe analgesics accordingly. These include non opioid or opiod medicines, as well as anti depressants and other anti seizure medicines.
DID YOU KNOW?
Some oncologists asks these patients to use a 'Pain control diary', which has recorded details on each treatment, how effective it is and any side effects, so that health care workers can have an idea about the suitability of particular treatment provided.
