Canavan disease is a progressive, fatal neurological disorder that begins in infancy. It is caused by an inherited genetic abnormality: the lack of an essential enzyme causes deterioration of the white matter (myelin) in the brain, thereby preventing the proper transmission of nerve signals.
HOW IS CANAVAN DISEASE DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis is usually done by a neurologist based on a physical examination that points at the various symptoms. Also, genetic testing and screening for carrier gene location, blood chemistry, a CT scan of the head, and urine chemistry can help in diagnosis.
HOW IS CANAVAN DISEASE TREATED?
Unfortunately there is no cure for this condition, but symptomatic treatment and supportive measurements can be carried out.
DID YOU KNOW?
Death due to Canavan’s disease usually occurs before the age of 10, in rare cases children may live up to their teens or twenties.
