This potentially fatal disease is usually caused by exposure to botulism neurotoxin, which is one of the most lethal substances known to man. It can be contracted from food or from a wound infected by the said bacteria. This disease can lead to flaccid paralysis of the body’s muscles. The symptoms include cramps in various parts of the body, choking, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, as well as swallowing difficulties.
HOW IS BOTULISM DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of this disease is usually carried out with the help of a brain scan or a thorough examination of the spinal fluids. Also, labs tests involving blood, stool and serum samples may be conducted.
HOW IS BOTULISM TREATED?
Antitoxin should be administered as soon as possible after a clinical diagnosis. Early administration is effective in reducing mortality rates. Physicians may remove whatever contaminated food is still in the gut by inducing vomiting or by using enemas. Wounds should be treated, usually surgically, to remove the source of the toxin-producing bacteria. Severe botulism cases require supportive treatment, especially mechanical ventilation, which may be required for weeks or even months.
DID YOU KNOW?
Good practice in food preparation, particularly preservation and hygiene, prevents botulism.
