Blastomycosis is a fungal skin infection that affects humans and other animals. It is caused by the organism Blastomyces dermatitidis. Common symptoms of Blastomycosis are: • Flu-like illness accompanied by fever or chills • Muscle pain, headache and non-productive cough • Asymptomatic skin lesions • Bone lytic lesions that cause pain • Hoarseness due to Laryngeal involvement • Chronic illness that mimics lung cancer or tuberculosis • Asymptomatic prostatitis causing painful urination
HOW IS BLASTOMYCOSIS DIAGNOSED?
On suspecting Blastomycosis, general physicians may confirm diagnosis through KOH prep or cytology or histology. Tissue biopsy may be required for diagnosing extrapulmonary disease. For definitive confirmation of the diagnosis, culture of the organism may be performed.
HOW IS BLASTOMYCOSIS TREATED?
Mild Blastomycosis infection that stays in the lungs can be treated with medicines. The health specialist will recommend antifungal medicines for severe infections that may spread outside the lungs. Follow up sessions are very important to ensure the infections do not return.
