Blackheads are a symptom of non-inflammatory acne, a common skin condition that involves lesions, commonly referred to as spot, pimples, whiteheads or blackheads. It is a condition in which the pores of the skin become blocked. Blackheads are a specific kind of dark acne lesion. They contain oxidised melanin, the pigment made by skin cells known as melanocytes. Simple blackheads do not usually cause pain or other symptoms; however, severe acne may signal a serious skin problem. The reasons for the development of blackheads are not well known.
