A birth defect, which affects how the body looks and works, can vary from mild to severe. There are many causes of birth defects including ingestion of drugs or alcohol during pregnancy, hereditary, genetic, etc. Some birth defects are noticed before birth, some at the time of birth, and during the first year of life. Some of such defects are cleft lip, clubfoot, some types of heart defects, gastroschisis, etc.
HOW IS BIRTH DEFECTS DIAGNOSED?
Many birth defects can be diagnosed during pregnancy by prenatal ultrasound of the uterus. Women who have higher risk pregnancy due to family history may be tested further by blood tests or by taking a sample of amniotic fluid. A physical examination and hearing test may also be used to diagnose birth defects after the baby is born. A blood test called the newborn screen can help diagnose some birth defects before the symptoms occur.
HOW IS BIRTH DEFECTS TREATED?
If the defects are detected before birth i. e . In the womb itself some of them can be treated by suggesting particular medications to the mother where some can be cured by conducting surgeries in the womb itself. Some defects that cannot be diagnosed before birth need to be treated through medicines or surgically after birth
