Birth defects are usually caused when the baby is in the womb and can occur due to a series of reasons like lifestyle choices, genetics, excessive use of medicines and chemicals during pregnancy and others. These defects may affect the functioning of various organs and senses, or they can affect the appearance of the baby.
HOW IS BIRTH DEFECTS DIAGNOSED?
Gynaecologists detect birth defects during the prenatal tests. Birth defects that cannot be diagnosed during the prenatal tests are tested by paediatricians after the baby is born through newborn screening tests.
HOW IS BIRTH DEFECTS TREATED?
Treatment of birth defects is not possible while the baby is in the womb. Some preventive steps can be taken by the mother, such as, taking vaccinations, prenatal vitamins, ensure that they don't have STDs and avoid unnecessary medication. Taking a healthy diet and doing regular exercise can also help prevent birth defects.
