Aplastic Anemia is a rare disease that occurs when the patient’s body ceases to produce new blood cells. The symptoms of this potentially fatal condition include persistent fatigue, breathlessness caused by the slightest physical activity, constant occurrence of infections, rashes on the skin, and dizzy spells. This condition usually takes time to progress.
HOW IS APLASTIC ANEMIA DIAGNOSED?
A blood test or a bone marrow biopsy can help diagnose aplastic anemia.
HOW IS APLASTIC ANEMIA TREATED?
The treatment for milder cases of Aplastic Anemia may not require any treatment. When the blood counts become lower and symptoms develop the platelets are given through transfusions. Later over time the transfusions may not be as effective and it could be a life threatening situation. Bone marrow or stem cell transplant may be suggested for people under the age of 40. A sibling donor is preferred for most effective results. Older people are prescribed with medicines that may allow bone marrow to generate healthy blood cells. However there are changes of relapse of the disease. In severe cases a bone marrow transplant may be recommended.
