Angioedema is a rapid swelling of the dermis or subcutaneous tissue. It may affect many organ systems. Some of the common symptoms include visible swelling, burning sensation, abdominal pain, throat tightness, voice changes and breathing trouble.
HOW IS ANGIOEDEMA DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of Angioedema includes a number of tests such as routine blood tests including complete blood count, electrolytes, renal function and liver enzymes. Additionally, when a patient has-been stabilized, further investigations can be made. Imaging tests such as CT scan, MRI scan, Radiography and ultrasound can be helpful in order to diagnose a case of Angioedema.
HOW IS ANGIOEDEMA TREATED?
The primary goal of medical treatment for angioedema is to reduce and prevent swelling, as well as to reduce discomfort and complication. Most medications used in treating urticaria and anaphylaxis are also used in the management of many types of angioedema. Epinephrine should be used when laryngeal angioedema is suspected. In addition, supportive care should be provided, regardless of the etiology.
