Amoebiasis is a parasitic infection of the intestines caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica or E. histolytica. The symptoms of amoebiasis include loose stool, abdominal cramping, cysts and stomach pain.
HOW IS AMOEBIASIS DIAGNOSED?
Amoebiasis can be diagnosed by assessing patient’s health history, stool samples and liver tests. In advanced cases, a CT scan and Colonoscopy might be performed.
HOW IS AMOEBIASIS TREATED?
The treatment depends on the severity of the case from person to person. Generally antibiotic medicines are prescribed. In cases of vomiting, intravenous medicines are required till the patient can take them orally. In complicated cases of abscess rupture a surgical intervention may be required.
