Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is an inherited disorder that affects the formation of tooth enamel. The gene mutations are passed down in families. However, new gene alterations can occur even without family history. When the tooth enamel does not cover the soft layer it can cause rapid decay and affect the nerves and blood vessels in the tooth for a risk of infection. The tooth can attract plaque and tartar deposits which may cause gum diseases.
