Abandoned child syndrome refers to the psychological or behavioral issues that children who have been abandoned by one or both parents demonstrate. The abandonment can be because of physical absence of the parent from the child’s life or even because the parent or parents fail to provide emotional support – such as nurturing, affection or stimulation - to the child. Children who have been sexually abused by their parent can also show abandoned child syndrome. Sleeping and eating disorders, depression, anxiety, anger, insecurities and guilt are some of the symptoms that children suffering from abandoned child syndrome display. Drug and alcohol addiction is also one of the common symptoms for this syndrome.
HOW IS ABANDONED CHILD SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
Mood swings, anger and guilt are usually studied in order to diagnose the abandoned child syndrome. The therapist can study a pattern of emotional neglect which the individual has faced in order to understand the extent of the trauma.
