Insomnia in children is characterized by difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Some children might even awaken early in the morning. A child getting less than 10 hours sleep a night would be irritable and cranky. Excessive daytime sleepiness or difficulty staying awake during the day are characteristics of children with insomnia

There is no specific test for insomnia. The diagnosis is based on symptoms and the exclusion of other medical problems, psychiatric problems and other sleep disorders.
HOW IS INSOMNIA IN CHILDREN TREATED?
There are no medications to induce sleep in children but sometimes paediatricians would prescribe drugs which make one sleepy such as antihistamines to children.
