Hepatic encephalopathy is a decline in brain function that occurs as a result of severe liver disease. In this condition, the liver cannot adequately remove toxins from the blood. This causes a buildup of toxins in the bloodstream, which can lead to brain damage. Symptoms are those of impaired brain function, especially reduced alertness and confusion. In the earliest stages, subtle changes appear in logical thinking, personality, and behavior. The person's mood may change and judgment may be impaired. Normal sleep patterns may be disturbed. People may become depressed, anxious or irritable. They may have trouble concentrating.
HOW IS HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY DIAGNOSED?
Hepatic Encephalopathy can be caused by kidney problems, low oxygen levels, surgery/trauma, fatigue and dehydration, among others.
HOW IS HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY TREATED?
The treatment for Hepatic encephalopathy will be approached based purely on the diagnosis of the individual and the severity of the condition. The objective of the treatment will be to rid the body of some of the toxins which hinder the functioning of the liver. Some antibiotics can also be prescribed to control the situation. A series of steps in controlling the diet and food intake will also help.
DID YOU KNOW?
With treatment, hepatic encephalopathy is frequently reversible. In fact, complete recovery is possible, especially if the encephalopathy was triggered by a reversible cause. However, people with a chronic liver disorder are susceptible to future episodes of encephalopathy. Some require continuous treatment.
