Alkaptonuria is a rare genetic disorder that results in darkening of the urine. In some cases, it damages the cartilage, heart valves and leads to kidney stones. It usually occurs in people over the age of 30.
HOW IS ALKAPTONURIA DIAGNOSED?
Confirmation of Alkaptonuria can be done through urine evaluation for concentration of homogentisic acid.
HOW IS ALKAPTONURIA TREATED?
While there is no known treatment for this disease, the doctor may ask you to bring down the protein content of your diet and take food that is rich in Vitamin C and ascorbic acid.
