Silicosis is a condition caused by inhaling to much silica over a long period of time. While silica is a crystal-like mineral found in sand and rocks, it can have deadly consequences for people who work with stone, concrete, glass or other forms of rock. Any level of silica exposure can result in Silicosis. Silicosis is a progressive condition i.e. it gets worse over time and its symptoms consist of cough, weakness, chest pain, night sweats and shortness of breath.
HOW IS SILICOSIS DIAGNOSED?
A general physician will recommend lung function with pulmonary function tests along with chest x-ray and bronchoscopy to diagnose the condition.
HOW IS SILICOSIS TREATED?
The aim of treatment will be to reduce your symptoms. Cough medicine can help with cough symptoms and antibiotics can help treat respiratory infections. Inhalers can be used to open up the airways. Further exposure to silica needs to be avoided.
