What are the best home remedies for tooth pain?

Tooth pain, also commonly known as a toothache, occurs when nerves inside a tooth’s pulp chamber react due to some external stimulus. How bad the toothache is will depend on the degree and type of external stimulus. You can deal with a toothache by using a wide range of home remedies.

  1. Salt and Warm water:

The most common one is mixing salt and warm water, and using it as a mouthwash. It acts as a pain reliever or helps to get rid of tooth pain and also gets rid of debris from the mouth.

  2. Peppermint leaves with tea:

Mixing the juice of peppermint leaves with tea helps in numbing the pain of a toothache. Tea also contains astringents that help reduce swelling.

  3. Ice Pack:

Wrapping a small ice pack around the affected tooth is an easy way to numb the nerves that cause pain.

  4. A combination of ginger and chilli:

It not only adds mouth-watering flavours in your food but also helps combat the pain. Make a paste of chilli and ginger, use a cotton ball to scoop some paste and then place the cotton ball on the affected area. Avoid the tongue and gums in the process.

  5. Vinegar:

It is another household item that can be used to deal with a toothache. Applying vinegar to the affected area reduces pain.

  6. Clove:

Clove contains a compound called eugenol which possesses anti-inflammatory properties and reduces any gum inflammation and provides relief from pain. You can directly apply clove oil to the affected area with the help of a cotton ball.

  10. Avoid hard, cold, acidic foods:

Hard, cold, acidic foods increase the toothache so, it's highly recommended to avoid consuming these foods If you are suffering from dental problems.

  11. Guava, sweet potato, sunflower leaves:

Are there any side effects of remedies for tooth pain?

One of the remedies which involve using a combination of ginger and chili paste could cause problems in the adjoining areas if care is not taken. The idea is to apply it to the affected teeth and keep them away from the gums and tongue. In case the paste comes in contact with the gums or the tongue, it can irritate.

The ice pack, too, if applied for a long period can lead to a cold.

Summary: Despite being effective, certain home remedies have some side effects which vary from person to person, so choose your home remedy only if you are not allergic or sensitive to the particular substance. Do not use any home remedies in excess as it may be harmful to health.
