What are the best home remedies for nausea?

Most people have experienced nausea, at one point or the other in their life. Nausea is a common symptom that causes you to feel uneasy, queasy, and sick. It is usually accompanied by vomiting. Nausea can be the result of morning sickness, dehydration, acidity, food poisoning, flu, stress, and motion sickness.

It is important to discover and treat the underlying cause of nausea as well as the symptom. Generally, nausea tends to resolve itself within a day or two. Unless it persists, you can treat nausea at home with the help of a few remedies and rest.

Here are some effective natural home remedies for nausea:

  1. Inhale the scents of peppermint and lemon:

If you are feeling nauseous, slice a fresh lime and inhale its fragrance. The fresh citrus smell of the lime will cut through nausea, settle your stomach and soothe you.

The scent of peppermint has a similar capacity to soothe the stomach. You can drink a cup of tea made from peppermint leaves or rub peppermint oil on your gums.

  2. Ginger:

It is one of the most effective home remedies for nausea, whether it is in the form of tea, juice or just raw ginger. To make ginger tea, boil two cups of water, for three minutes.

Peel and slice a piece of raw ginger, adding it to the boiled water. Keep it to rest for five minutes. Strain the tea and add a teaspoon of honey to it. Drink it twice a day. It will provide relief and help to get rid of nausea.

  3. Relax muscle:

Sometimes neck or back pain could cause you to feel nauseous. An effective remedy to counter this nausea is stretching exercises. For a neck exercise, start by tilting your head forward until your chin is almost touching your chest and hold this position for ten seconds.

Then gently tilt your head to the right side, until your ear is in line with your shoulder. Do the same for the left side and hold for ten seconds. Repeat this whole exercise, slowly around thrice a day.

  4. Staying hydrated:

Water has a soothing effect on the stomach. Water also promotes the digestion of food. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  5. Fennel powder:

Fennel powder possesses antiemetic properties which help to promote digestion and reduce the tendency of nausea. You can consume fennel seeds by making its tea.

  6. Cinnamon:

Cinnamon can be a handy treatment for nausea that is caused by digestive problems. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder into a cup of boiling water. Add a few drops of honey and then drink the mixture.

  7. Cool compress:

Your body temperature may rise when having a tendency of nausea so keeping cold compress on the back of your neck may help to reduce temperature and simultaneously nausea.

  8. Acupressure:

There is a specific pressure point P6 on the inner side of the wrist which when pressed, may help to reduce tendency of nausea.

Summary: Nausea can be prevented by taking ginger tea, mint, orange juice, fennel seeds, Apple cider vinegar, cinnamon. Practice exercise for relaxing muscles. Drink plenty of water. Apply Cool compress.

Are there any side effects of remedies for nausea?

Usually, there are not many side effects involved in home remedies for nausea. However, it is advisable to consume ginger only in moderation. In some cases, consuming ginger in excess can lead to side effects such as stomach upset, heartburn and if you have an allergy, an allergic reaction to ginger.

It is advisable for those with bleeding disorders and pregnant women to avoid consuming too much ginger. Since ginger functions as a blood-thinning agent, it can cause excessive bleeding. While following the stretching neck exercises, it is important to exercise caution.

If the instructions are not followed properly, it can cause you to strain a neck or shoulder muscle as well as dizziness.

Summary:Despite being effective, certain home remedies have some side effects which vary from person to person, so choose your home remedy only if you are not allergic or sensitive to the particular substance. Do not use any home remedies in excess as it may be harmful to health.
