Ankylosing Spondylitis or AS is a type of arthritis that affects the spine. Common symptoms include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Additionally, the spine's bones or vertebrae may grow or fuse together, resulting in a rigid spine. These changes may be mild or severe, and may lead to a stooped-over posture or hunched back.
HOW IS ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS DIAGNOSED?
Ankylosing Spondylitis can be diagnosed in of the following ways:• Schober’s Test• X ray and MRI of the spine• The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index Test• Genetic Testing
HOW IS ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS TREATED?
There is no treatment for AS however some treatments and medications may reduce the symptoms and pain. Dietary modifications are beneficial for AS patients that are low in starches found in flour products and potatoes. In some cases surgery is conducted: • Vertebral osteotomy • Fracture stabilization • Joint replacement
