How An Abusive Relationship Affect Your Health?

The effects of an abusive relationship are sometimes not visible until it is too late. While most of you will think of the emotional torture that the person goes through, there is more than what meets the eye. Imagine a female who is in a relationship with a guy who is very strict with finances. She might even be reluctant to ask for money so that she can buy her medicines regularly. For someone with asthma or epilepsy, this could be a devastating situation.

  1. Physical effects: Depending on how aggressive the person gets physically, the injuries could range from bruises to cuts to broken bones. There are instances of head injuries, and most partners suffer through in silence. When regularly subjected to abuse, the person could end up with chronic headaches, back pain, and digestive issues. They may not eat well or eat very poorly, leading to multiple health issues. In some cases, patients even fear from going to sleep as they feel scared of being raped or murdered. Regular medications may not be taken, which is very common and leads to various complications. For instance, not taking regular medications for diabetes can cause various complications.
  2. Emotional: Given that an abusive relationship is often suppressed, there is severe depression and anxiety that is beneath the surface. The person could become suicidal or get into substance abuse. There is low self-esteem and self-confidence in a person who is in an abusive relationship. This is worsened when the person who is abusing is around. The affected person would not be able to make decisions, feels tired, and has no zest for life. Worse is abuser convinces the other person that the problem lies with them. With kids around, the children could be subjected to long-term emotional damage. They could end up being rebels, get into bad company, get into substance abuse, feel neglected socially - and become anti-social.
  3. Social: A person in an abusive relationship often gets into isolation and tries to stay away from family and in particular friends.

Postnatal Depression - How Eating Right Can Help You?

Giving birth to a baby should make a mother ecstatic but in many cases, this can lead to post-natal depression. This can include crying spells, mood swings, insomnia and anxiety. Post-natal depression can begin a few days after delivery and can continue for a few weeks post-delivery. In some cases, this depression can become a long-lasting condition known as post-partum depression. Hence it is important to be able to manage these feelings.

Here are a few tips.

  1. Eat right: Giving your body the right nutrition can help improve your mental health and prevent mood swings. Keep away from processed foods and eat fresh wholesome meals. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.
  2. Get a massage: New mothers often find it hard to sleep and this can aggravate post-natal depression. A massage is a great way to soothe tired muscles and calm the mind. Massages can also help the body recover from the strain of childbirth. Using certain oils can further intensify the benefits of a massage.
  3. Meditate: Meditation can be very beneficial for post-natal depression. The best time to meditate is as soon as you wake up. A mere 5-10 minutes of meditation can help calm the mind and give you the strength to get through the day.
  4. Counselling: If you feel yourself spiralling downwards, you must ask for help. A counsellor can understand what you are going through and can give you the tools you need to fight against it. Counsellors can also help you set realistic goals for yourself and teach you ways to respond to situations. In some cases, family therapy for you and your spouse could also help.
  5. Join a support group: Understand that you are not alone. Post-natal depression is a common condition faced by many young mothers. Joining a new mothers group can help you come to terms with the change in your life and help you deal with situations in a better way.

Know The Significance Of Therapy In Helping To Get Over Suicidal Thoughts!

Know The Significance Of Therapy In Helping To Get Over Suicidal Thoughts!

Suicidal thoughts, often known as suicidal ideation, refer to developing thoughts or desires to commit suicide. Having suicidal thoughts means experiencing a fleeting consideration or detailed planning to commit suicide.

Usually, excessive stress, depression or lot of emotional distress leads to developing such thoughts. However, there are various treatment options that can help one out, the psychiatric therapy being one of them.
Continue reading to know more about the significance of therapy in getting over suicidal thoughts.

The risks can be assessed
Therapy sessions help in evaluating the severity of the condition. Typically, therapy is targeted towards helping the person having suicidal thoughts to deal with the condition and understand why the thoughts are being caused. But, along with treating the patient, psychiatric professionals also analyze the risks that the person possesses by analyzing his or her response to the therapies. Patients with suicidal thoughts not only threaten to kill or hurt themselves but also exhibit revenge-seeking behaviour, and therefore, therapy targets to prevent them from engaging in risky behaviour.

The cause can be identified
From medications to counselling sessions, there are several types of psychiatric treatments available to treat a patient with suicidal thoughts. Apart from the therapy consisting of medications, it is the conversation sessions between the therapists and patients that give positive results.

A person suffering from suicidal thoughts needs to speak with someone who understands him or her. The primary purpose of talking is to identify the underlying factors or the reasons behind the patients’ suicidal thoughts, which helps in treating the condition fast and more effectively.

Every patient is addressed separately
Sometimes, patients need more than a combination of drugs to get over their suicidal thoughts. And, when it comes to psychiatric therapy, the psychiatrist justly analyzes the need and offers the necessary treatment to the patient as per the individual requirements.

Every person is different, and two people suffering from suicidal thoughts may have completely different underlying causes. While a history of family trouble may cause one's suicidal thoughts, another's thoughts may be the result of financial struggles. The best psychiatrists treat every patient separately, as each case has something unique to it that needs to be resolved for the patients’ recovery.

Suicidal thoughts, in the majority of cases, may not lead to the final act of committing suicide but includes developing the thoughts and planning suicide in detail. But for some people, it may make oneself indulge in poor lifestyle choices, such as drug and alcohol, or even hurting oneself and others. Therefore, consulting a psychiatrist is crucial as they may help manage such thoughts before they lead to any serious consequences.

The Harmful Effects Of A Dysfunctional Family On A Child!

The Harmful Effects Of A Dysfunctional Family On A Child!

A dysfunctional family comprises of destructive and harmful parenting along with a persistent lack of concern for the child. The harmful effects that a dysfunctional family wreaks on a child often go unnoticed and unacknowledged. In most cases, no action is taken to rectify the situation or to minimize the negative effects on the child.

When the distress caused to the child is severe and long-drawn, it may lead to the development of psychological conditions such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. If these conditions are not treated, they may affect the child for the rest of their life. Below are different types of a dysfunctional family and its impacts on the child:

  1. There are families where either one or both the parents are drug or alcohol addicts or possess some other kind of addiction. These addictions may cause the parent to pass out or go missing for extended spans of time, behave unexpectedly, or cause acute financial hardship for the family. Children belonging to such families grow up to be distrustful adults who believe others to be unreliable and untrustworthy.
  2. Children hailing from families where the parents are getting divorced are often used as pawns. The parents who are divorcing often try to turn the child against the other one, say negative things about the other parent, inhibit the child from communicating with the other parent, or coercing the child to reject the other parent altogether. Such children develop various types of mental problems when they grow up. These problems could cause irrational self-blame, self-loathing, and even drug dependence.
  3. There are families in which volatility and violence are predominant. Children coming from such families are also at the risk of manifesting similar behaviour patterns. When the child grows up, he or she may become rebellious and manifest anti-social behaviours such as picking up fights with peers, vandalizing property, bullying others, truancy and dropping out of an educational institution.
  4. Some children are forcibly detached from their parents’ care owing to various reasons such as being taken into care by someone else or sentenced to juvenile detention. Such children also tend to be unsocial when they grow up and show unexpected and undesired behaviour patterns.
  5. Children belonging to families where parents have a mental illness, slowly turn into the abyss of depression which, in turn, affects their own psychological development.
  6. On the other hand, families where the parents exercise absolute control over the child and the parents make unprecedented control of their power tend to bring up children who are mentally retarded and sick.

A child hailing from a dysfunctional family often struggles in adulthood due to lack of emotional maturity. Therefore, in the best interest of the child, measures should be taken such that the child grows up to be a healthy, stable, and responsible citizen.

Is Social Media Making You Depressed?

Is Social Media Making You Depressed?

Most people today begin and end their days by looking into their phones. Whether its Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other social media platform, chances are that you devote a lot of time to browsing through other people’s lives and comparing them to yours. Social media platforms are a great way to keep in touch with people but they can have a negative effect on you as well. Social media is slowly becoming a common reason for depression. Here’s how.

  1. Glamour vs reality: A friend may put up a picture of the view out of an office room and caption it “view from my office”. When you see this while sitting in a room filled with cubicles, it can be depressing. What you may not know is that the picture may not really be of your friend’s office but be simply a temporary room they are working out of for the day.
  2. Overstimulation: We are constantly flooded with information. At times, this can get too much too handle. For people with existing anxiety issues, this could aggravate the problem and make the day more stressful than it already is.
  3. Distraction: The constant stream of notifications on your phone and laptop can distract you from the work you actually need to do. As a result, your productivity may decrease. In turn, this can make you frustrated at the end of the day and make you spend more time than you need to on simple tasks.
  4. Negativity: A majority of the social media posts on your timeline are negative rants against various people and institutions, news about sad events and agenda driven monologues. This negativity spreads easily and can easily influence your life and make you see things in a negative way.
  5. Unwanted attention: Just as social media makes it easy for you to get in touch with old friends; it also makes it easy for stalkers to get in touch with you. Lewd messages and unwanted attention can make a person feel harassed and bullied. In extreme cases, it can also make a person suicidal.
  6. Health issues: Our mental and physical health is interlinked. Thus, if you are physically unwell, you will feel mentally low as well. Peering into a phone and laptop screen constantly can give rise to a number of health issues such as deteriorating eyesight, neck pain and stress headaches. In turn, this can make you feel frustrated and low.

This condition has made my life miserable such that I have never engaged in a relationship (never had sex), cannot socialise and suffer from anxiety and depression. I've been to different doctors but have not succeeded in finding help. I take 800 mg of Tramadol and 400 mg of propranolol everyday to feel a bit calm and be able to sleep. My friend trust me even a big penis 11-12 inches have failed to satisfy a woman, on the other hand even a small one of 3-4 inches have made them fulfilled. Size is not at all a parameter to judge the level of satisfaction of a female. Trust yourself, and give it a try with a girl, engage more on oral sex and be confident you would be able to satisfy her during penetration also.

Dear lybrate-user Usually after losing some one close, people go through a grief reaction. But if it is severe and causing dysfunction in your day to day activities you should consult a clinical psychologist and get help. Grief therapy could help. Regular 30 mts activity such as walking might help. Do not spend time alone.

Hello there, This is Nasrat, 29 years old, I`m suffering form depression since last four years while I have last my beloved brother. So, I took different kinds of medications such as fluoxetine 20 mg, escitalopram 10 mg, paroxetine 10 mg, mirtazapine USP 15 mg, venlafaxine Hcl 75 mg, Lithium carbonate B.P. 400 mg etc. But still I have the same problem, difficulty in thinking (poor concentration, poor memory), excessive feel of guilt, loss of interest in most activities, sleep disturbances, decreased energy or tiredness, feeling of low self confidence, feeling of hopelessness, decrease in activity, excessive or inappropriate worries, anticipation of the worst, thoughts of suicide. Besides, I have premature ejaculation and no sexual desire. So, I`m really disappointed. Are there any solution for my problems? Its mentionable that when I was in Japan, I took Lorazepam (0, 5 mg), Brotizlolam (0, 25 mg), Trazodone (25 mg), Suvorexant (20 mg), Escitalopram (10 mg), Lansoprazole (15 mg) for 8 months, with those medications I felt very well, but unfortunately, when I returned to my country, there were no those medications available, and my depression attacked me again. So, dear doctors Please please please recommend me what to do? I`m not interested to live in this world but, I`m the only person to support my big family. At the same time, I took (Clarithromycin 500 mg, Amoxicillin 1000 mg 14 days), (Lansoprazole 30 mg 3 months) for positive h pylori but did not work. Again, I took (Clarithromycin 500 mg, metronidazole, Amoxicillin 1000 mg 14 days), (esomeprazole 40 mg 3 months) for positive h pylori but still I have the same issue. Your cooperation would be highly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, You need a proper diagnosis before going in for treatment. If h pylori is confirmed, it needs active treatment. Premature ejaculation and loss of sexual desire also needs to be diagnosed and treated. At Japan, you were treated with Lorazepam (available in India). Instead of brotizolam, you can try etizolam available in India. Trazodone available in India. Suvorexant is another mild hypnotic. You don't need so many hypnotic and anxiolytic. Lorazepam or etizolam will do. Escitalopram is available in India. Instead of Lansoprazole, esomeprazole has been given to you. All that you need to know, what is the type of depression that you are suffering. If it is bipolar type, Lithium carbonate type of mood stabiliser will work on you. It depends on the effective blood level dose (0.8 - 1.2) not just 400 mg. If it major depressive disorder, you need antidepressants like" fluoxetine 20 mg, escitalopram 10 mg, paroxetine 10 mg, mirtazapine USP 15 mg, venlafaxine Hcl 75 mg" But all are in starting dose. It needs to be built after 2-3 weeks depending on the improvement and side effects. If it is mixed anxiety depression disorder, you need to add etizolam to the antidepressant. I would suggest second opinion with all your reports of h pylori and endoscopy, hormonal tests and Japan doctors diagnosis and prescriptions.
