Photophobia refers to an acute case of abnormal intolerance to light, which is also signified with signs of extreme discomfort and pain in the eyes. Such people are unable to tolerate the heat and direct sunlight and thus prefer staying indoors. It can be a genetic condition but some people acquire it post serious illnesses. Overestimation of the pupil happens in such cases.
HOW IS PHOTOPHOBIA DIAGNOSED?
The eye specialist will perform a physical examination and ask for medical history along with details of symptoms to diagnose the condition. The following tests may be done:
• Corneal scraping
• Lumbar puncture (most often done by a neurologist)
• Pupil dilation
• Slit-lamp examination
HOW IS PHOTOPHOBIA TREATED?
While Photophobia is a common symptom of migraine headaches, it is normally treated with medication.
