Whenever one starts anything new, to some extent apprehension & anxiety comes normally. As you are new to riding bike, you are experiencing the anxiety & fear. Do not stop riding because of it. Stay focused & positive, & continue riding regularly. With regular practice you will gradually become expert & habituated to riding. Your confidence will grow, & anxiety & fear will disappear. Rather than concentrating on what people will think about you, focus on your priorities & your goals. Systematize your thoughts. Before doing any work plan properly regarding how you will do the work to your best capabilities & proceed accordingly. When you will do your works to your best abilities, your confidence will grow, you will feel good about your performance, & you will become more focused on doing your tasks better & better. Then you will become more busy with & concentrated on your own life rather than on your surroundings.

Anger Management

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Guwahati

Emotions are our feelings. Sometimes we are happy & sometimes sad, sometimes angry & upset, sometimes calm & contented. Joy, sorrow, fear, grief, anger, jealousy, love etc are normal human emotions which every individual experiences. These emotions are there in everyone, but how one reacts to the emotions vary from person to person, based on his tolerance level, coping skills, patience etc. Anger is one such emotion, which do us harm if not controlled. One does not have control over his emotions, but has control over his actions.

Anger is a basic emotion which every human being experiences in response to life events or situations. If out of control it may harm in aspect of career, relationships & varied aspects of life, and also brings in feeling of insult, frustrations, disappointment, & other negative feelings within. Try the following measures to control your anger:

1) First realize & acknowledge that you have the anger outburst problem, & stay aware & cautious about it in all situations.

2) Try to understand your own emotions especially those events, situations etc that triggers your anger. Whenever you face any such situations, stay alert & calm, try to avoid it or control it.

3) When you are angry, take a short break, move away from that place if possible, have a cup of tea or coffee etc to calm your mind.

4) Whenever you are feeling angry, try to interrupt the anger cycle in the following way:

a) At that moment do not talk & try to divert yourself & control your anger first. In the state of anger you may say or do things which you may regret later after you calm down.

b) Try to distract your mind by visiting a favorite website, listen a song on your cell phone, do something that comforts you or daydream about an activity of choice etc.

c) Use countdown to distract your mind- start counting backwards from 100 to 1.

d) Use physical relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercise.

e) Use mental relaxation techniques like positive thinking & imagery, where you imagine anything that gives you happiness.

f) Just talk to someone with whom you feel comfortable and relaxed.

g) Take your anger as a humor & laugh it away.

Try till your anger calms down.

5) If any person or situation is triggering your anger repeatedly talk to the concerned person when you are in a calm & relaxed state of mind, or work on solving the problem.

6) Work on increasing the calmness of your mind, so that you do not break down easily in any situation. For that do physical activities like regular exercise, yoga, meditation, relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercise daily. Sleep adequately & maintain a healthy lifestyle.

7) Avoid substance of abuse like alcohol, cannabis etc, as these substances reduces frustration tolerance & makes the mind restless easily.

8) Try to be good listener & develop good communication skills, as proper communication solves many problems.

9) Learn to assert yourself, express your feelings calmly & directly, without becoming hostile & defensive.

10) Do not try to suppress your anger, but try to solve it. As suppressing anger leads to anxiety, depression, & other detrimental effects on the body within.

If after trying above also you are not able to control your anger, then seek professional help. Consult a Psychiatrist who will evaluate you & advice you medicines or counseling sessions accordingly.

I am married from last 11 months. After 4 months of marriage I get to know that she had a boyfriend from last 5 year ...
The present situation is disturbing you much. It may be that it is just a doubt in your mind & the previous relation is past for your wife also & she is struggling to come out of the past memories, or it may be that she herself is confused regarding what to do & what not to do, as some emotions are still lingering, for which she is doing all these things. Go for a healthy & constructive discussion with her, when both of you are in calm & relaxed state of mind. First talk to her & try to find out what is her present opinion regarding her past relation & how she looks at it now. Then express to her openly that certain acts of her like her calling her ex-boyfriend repeatedly, checking his FB profiles etc are not the right things to do, as it will never allow her to come out of her past, will harm her emotionally, & are bringing in many doubts in your mind which is affecting you personally & professionally, ultimately may affect your married life. Tell her one do not have control over one’s emotions, but have control over one’s actions. If she do not come out of her past, three lives will be affected- hers, yours & her ex- boyfriend who had already moved ahead in life. Show your concern for her, be a good listener, make her feel you are with her, & try to help her deal with the situation & come out of the emotion turmoil she is in. Together both of you work to solve this problem & make your relation grow strong & beautify it. Encourage her to move out of the past & focus on the new life you both started together. When you both will work together, understanding between you two will become strong, & she will perceive your support in her difficult times. That was a relation before marriage; now she is married & started a life with you, so do not look back at her past if she is trying to come out of it, as it will affect your married life. If the problem is not solved with your effort, then seek professional help & go for marital counseling. The building blocks of a strong healthy relationship are love, understanding, trust, respect, care, concern, compatibility & above all good communication with one another. For a relation to be successful there should not be any ego, pride, or manipulation in between the two, & one should present as one’s true self to the partner. More open the communication, more is the understanding & stronger is the bonding. Through discussions, most of the problems can be solved. There should be transparency in the relation. Doubting, accusing each other solves no problem, but have adverse outcome. Everything should be expressed openly. You are married for only 11mths; spend more time together, express your feelings, your likes & dislikes, communicate more so that you both understand each other better.

Hi. I am depressed and I take marijuana because relaxation. How to remove smoking from my life.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Guwahati
Marijuana is a substance of abuse & should never be used to reduce stress or achieve relaxation. If some problem is there in your life which you are not able to cope with, then seek professional help. Consult a Psychiatrist who will evaluate you & make your diagnosis, & then prescribe you medicines or advise you counseling sessions accordingly. With treatment, you will definitely come out of the current situation. Marijuana is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried flowers (buds, leaves, stems and seeds of Cannabis sativa—the hemp plant. It is a substance of abuse. Frequent marijuana users have increased irritability, mood swings, sleep disturbance, decreased appetite, cravings, restlessness etc. Marijuana does not have any beneficial effects on the body & harms in various ways. So would suggest that you quit smoking marijuana at the earliest. Now-a-days de-addiction treatments are available for quitting all substances of abuse including marijuana. Such treatment includes detoxification & rehabilitation program. Talk to the psychiatrist & start your treatment at the earliest for it also. With treatment you can quit smoking marijuana .Medical detoxification is the first stage of de addiction treatment, when the addicted person is treated with medicines. The withdrawal symptoms which occur on sudden stopping of an addictive substance are managed through detox treatment. Medical detoxification systematically and safely will withdraw you from the marijuana. The next phase is the Rehabilitation program which includes counseling sessions & other behavioral therapies. These sessions have important role in the de addiction process. Counseling sessions will help to enhance your motivation skills to stay sober, build skills to resist smoking marijuana, replace marijuana-using activities with constructive and rewarding non marijuana-using activities, and improve problem-solving abilities. Behavioral therapy will work on interpersonal relationships and your ability to function effectively in the family and community. Wish you speedy recovery.

Love is an emotion, a positive feeling. It grows into a relation between a boy & girl when it is two sided, when both find each other compatible, understand & respect each other or when their expectations are fulfilled. Maybe she had the feeling of love emotionally, but practically could not let it develop into a relation for some reasons personal to her, & walked out. That relation is past now. & life had moved ahead of it by 5 years. Do not take it in a negative & destructive way, but look at it maturely & practically. A relation is never successful if it is not compatible & two sided. Such relation ultimately breaks up at one point, & may be your relation would have broken down, if not then maybe later. If would have broken later would have harmed you more, as with years emotions would have grown stronger, maybe would have been married by then or maybe would have passed that age when you could have planned your life in a new way. She realized that the relation was not compatible for her, & she discontinued it. That was a good & healthy decision from her side to move out, rather than playing with your emotion or lingering something which was not possible from her side. Do not bring ego in between, as a break up does not mean personally either of the two is unworthy or not suitable, but it is the end of a relation that could not happen because of some reason. You are wasting your time in something that is past now. Plan your future & try to move ahead in life & take as whatever happened, had happened for good. Find someone with whom you are compatible & comfortable & start a new relation. As you said you had deep love for her; as the love did not grow into a relation, better to look at it a feeling you experienced once & try to move ahead towards an attuned relation. One cannot stay in the past, & have to move on. Do not keep any hatred feeling for her as it may harm both of you. Respect her decision & try to forget the past. You loved she once, always stay her well-wisher & long the best for her. One do not control over one’s emotion, but have control over one’s action. You both can still be good friends. At you will move ahead in life, you will slowly come out of your past. Think positive & all the best for your future life.

Two years back one night in the middle of sleep, I felt as if I was having a heart attack or stroke and was very much scared. Went to doctor next morning, doctor said I am perfectly fine and did not even give any medicines too. But from then on I have different symptoms which mimic heart problems or nerve problems or something in the brain and dizziness etc. Was ordered few tests and everything was normal so doctor said I have anxiety and prescribed serta 25 mg. With or without it I feel normal for 2-3 months or have anxiety for several days. I am so fed up. I am going for so many blood tests every 3-4 months just to make sure nothing is actually wrong with me. Now I even forget taking serta for days together. Can I use it as and when needed or should I use it daily. Also I feel the same with r without it.

Because of very busy schedule eating breakfast at 6 AM.
& dinner at 9 PM. No lunch.
Taking coffee 3-4 time.
No smokin...
Your eating schedule is an unhealthy one. Irregular eating habits affect the body metabolism, making the body at risk to various illnesses like high BP, diabetes, obesity, gastric problems etc. The human body works smoothly with regularity & irregular eating patterns may disrupt its normal rhythm. When you eat at irregular times, the body goes to a stress mode. Do not skip meals; eat heavy breakfast, lighter lunch & very light & early dinner. Sometimes skipping meals & sometimes overeating is not good for health. You eating breakfast at 6 am & dinner at 9pm are long gaps between meals. Do not give such long gaps. Besides the above three main meals, eat small healthy food in between like fruits, salads, fruit juices, soup etc. Avoid junk food & drink plenty of water. Make a routine for your meal timings as comfortable to you, & try to stick to the meal timings. Have the major meals at the gap of 5-6 hours. In between, at the gap of 2-3 hours take some small snacks in the daytime, & avoid eating more at night time. Take coffee twice only. To stay healthy it is very necessary that you eat a balanced diet to nourish the body. To achieve a balanced diet, include a wide variety of food from the following food groups, in-order to provide all essential nutrients to the body: 1. Protein containing food like poultry, eggs, sea food, nuts, beans including soybean 2.Diary food like milk, cheese, yogurt; these are rich in calcium, vitamin D & potassium. They also contain protein. 3. Variety of fruits & vegetables. These are low in calories & rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. 4. The grain group, which consist of breads & cereals like rice, oats etc. These are high in fiber, protein & other essential nutrients. 5. Oils including vegetable oils, low fat oils, mayonnaise etc. Also make required changes in diet according to age, health status, body needs, activity level, climatic & seasonal changes etc. A properly balanced diet will not only keep you healthy, but will lower the risk of various illnesses like obesity, diabetes, hypertension etc.
