Tender, painful, sore, red gums can be a symptom of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) or, more likely, periodontitis (inflammation of the attachment fibers of the teeth and supporting bone), which can arise due to a number of different causes. It can ultimately lead to receding gums and even damage to the bones of the jaw. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also increase the sensitivity of the gums, which may in some cases lead to soreness or pain. Painful gums can also arise due to localized sores on the gums, such as abscesses or aphthous ulcers
HOW IS TENDER GUMS DIAGNOSED?
The dentist can carry out a thorough dental examination to check the health of the gums, which may involve inserting a thin metal stick with a bend in one end (periodontal probe) beside the teeth. In some cases, a number of X-rays may be needed to check the condition of the teeth and jaw bone.
HOW IS TENDER GUMS TREATED?
The treatment for Tender Gums depends on the kind of gum disorder one suffers from. Apart from a complete change in oral hygiene routine, you would also be advised to use preventive gel on the gums. Besides this antibiotics may be given to treat infection.
DID YOU KNOW?
People with gum disease have the less severe form, called gingivitis, between 5% and 15% have a much more serious type of gum disease known as periodontitis. Gingivitis can worsen and ultimately lead to tooth loss. The gingivitis progresses, it develops into periodontitis, a condition in which the gums and bone that hold the teeth in place can be severely weakened.
