Gallstones are minute and hard deposits on the gallbladder’s surface and medically, the gallstones are considered to be of 2 types, the cholesterol stones and pigment stones. The causes for gallstones are either genetic or due to body weight as well as food habits. The normal symptoms associated with gallstones include pain in the upper portion of the abdomen, apart from vomiting, nausea etc.
HOW IS GALLSTONES DIAGNOSED?
The General Physician would normally give a thorough physical examination and order for an ultrasound test of the abdomen to be done. In specific cases, blood tests and CT scan or endoscopic ultrasound can also be considered by the doctor to diagnosis.
HOW IS GALLSTONES TREATED?
Most doctors would suggest the removal of the gallbladder if the gallstones are diagnosed to be of a serious nature. A general surgeon or a laparoscopic specialist surgeon will do the surgical removal of the gallbladder. In this, the surgeon would use probes to pierce the abdominal portion and make a nice cut and suck out the gallbladder. If the doctor feels that internal medicines can dissolve the stones, they may exercise that option as well.
