Pulpotomy treatment is done on primary or deciduous tooth, where a portion of the damaged pulp,, is removed by the dentist so as to maintain the remaining live pulpal tissues by means of therapeutic dressing. Each healthy tooth has a space inside it known as the "pulp space." As the name implies, this particular space is usually filled with soft tissues – blood vessels, nerves and pink-coloured connective tissues. If a tooth gets affected by a large cavity, the bacteria usually goes all the way down to the pulp and starts damaging it, which often causes toothache. There is no other form of treatment for a damaged pulp except pulpotomy or baby root canal treatment. During the procedure, the dentist applies a local anaesthesia on the gums to numb the tooth and its surrounding areas. After that the cavity and the bacteria are cleaned and removed. The pulp is then sterilized and medicated to stop the oozing blood and the chamber is sealed with a white-filling material or a stainless steel crown to prevent the area from further infection. The entire procedure is completed in a single sitting and takes not more than 45 minutes to 1 hour of time. Treatment cost usually ranges from $90 - $250, but with the different examinations, x-rays, crowns and fillings, the cost may go up to $750 - $3900 per tooth. Post treatment, the treated tooth may remain sensitive for a couple of days after which the feeling subsides.Good oral hygiene aids in the longevity of this treatment.
