An apicoectomy may be recommended by your dentist when the conventional treatments like root canal fail to control the infection. The tooth is anchored to the jaw bones by roots. Nerves and blood vessels pass through a canal within the roots to the pulp chamber inside the crown. The canal is a complex structure with many branches and sub- branches.
Infections of the root canal are the underlying cause of several dental disorders. The dentist treats the infections of the canal to alleviate cavities and other symptoms. But, the procedure is complex and in many instances the infection may return or the wound does not heal completely. However, most dentists prefer to repeat the root canal treatment before proceeding with apicoectomy.
A re-procedure is not recommended if a tooth has a crown or is part of a bridge. Usually, the subsequent procedure will eliminate any remaining infection or will resolve any untreated branches that had been overlooked in the initial procedure. This will avoid the need for an apicoectomy.
Before proceeding the dentist also reviews your medical history, other medical conditions and prescription drugs that you may be using. The endodontic will make a small incision in your gum to remove the infected tissue. He will remove the tip of the infected root and clean the area before sealing it. The tooth has large cracks or breaks, are not considered for an apicoectomy.
Apicoectomies take 30 to 90 minutes but the duration may vary with the location of the tooth and the complexity of the root structure. The treatment is generally safe with mild side-effects.
