Hi Doctor, Why Febrile Seizure happens in children under 5. How to find is it shivering or seizure. Why it not happens in every babies when they have fever above 100f. Please reply.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Agartala
Nice query dear. To explain the cause and pathology of seizure is difficult at this moment. Seizure is such episode where baby will be unresponsive, for short like about 30- 60 sec, there will be uprolling of eyes, fixed eyes, sustained movements of hands and legs, urinating, tongue injury etc. But in shivering nothing will happen, baby will be conscious.

EPILEPSY OR FITS (As laymen say )
***********************************************
Seizure is a sudden change in behavior that is the consequence of brain dysfunction.
Approximately 0.5–1% of population has epilepsy.
ome seizures are provoked i.e. that occur in the metabolic derangement, drug or alcohol withdrawal and in situations like acute paralysis or acute encephalitis. Such patients are not considered to have epilepsy because these seizures would not recur in the absence of the provocation.
Less than 50% of epilepsy cases will have an identifiable cause such as head trauma, brain tumor, paralysis, infection, brain malformation etc.
Having one seizure does not always mean that the patient would always get a seizure.
One episode of seizure may not require treatment.
Hospitalization is required in the first seizure only if it is associated with prolonged post seizure altered level of consciousness.
Patients with unprovoked seizure may not be allowed to drive for some time.
In children, seizure can occur with high grade fever.
In adults, the first episode of seizure may be due to worms in the brain. In such a situation, it may be necessary to do an MRI test.
A patient with seizure can get married, live a normal life and produce children.
It is a misnomer that during a fit you need to make the person smell a shoe.
During epilepsy, never put the fingers inside the mouth of the patient as you could be bitten. Use a spoon instead to prevent tongue bite.
A patient with epilepsy fall will have stiffness in the body; on the contrary, patient with cardiac loss of consciousness will fall loose.
A seizure that lasts for more than 5–10 minutes requires specialized attention.

Hello lybrate-user, instead of taking strong painkiller tablets for your headache, why don't you try taking homeopathic medicine? you can take homeopathic belladonna 200, 4 pills three times a day whenever you get headache. This medicine has no side effect and will relieve you of your complaints very fast.

I have migraine problem for the last one year or so. I am taking allopathy medicine for the last one month but it doesn't help me at all. please suggest some homely remedies for migraine. Thank you.

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, DM - Neurology

Thank you for posting your query. I am not sure how allopathy medicines did not help you. Topiramate and propranolol are very effective in reducing the severity and frequency of headaches. At home, try to eat on time and sleep well. Avoid stress and tension.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. For hypothyroidism there is only one medication and that is adequate dose of Levothyroxine to be taken daily early morning on empty stomach. If TSH is maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L then most of the symptoms of hypothyroidism are in check. As regards migrane it is a difficult condition to treat. Multiple remedies have to be tried, plus precaution should be taken to avoid known triggers. Thanks.
