Myths About Vitamin D

Myths About Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency is often linked with joint pain

While Vit D deficiency can definitely cause bone pains in the legs & feet, it is unlikely to cause knee joint pain. Most patients with Arthritis continue to take Calcium & Vit D in the hope of getting pain relief. This practice should be avoided.

Twisting injury in leg can sometimes also cause damage to internal knee structures. If you have persistent pain & swelling, get yourself checked for meniscus or ligament injury.

Hi. I broke my femor bone and got a plate around it with 20+ screws. Its been 8 yrs to the accident. Should I get it removed? How difficult the procedure would be? If I don't get it removed, will it create problem in future?

DNB (Orthopaedics), Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho), MBBS
Orthopedist, Gurgaon
I will not recommend plate removal if it is not causing discomfort. Removing such a long plate & screws will lead to stress risers, may cause fracture.

I have been suffering from Osteoarthritis for about five years. Doctors have advised knee operation. I can not opt for it due to it's heavy cost. Please suggest a cheaper treatment.

In advanced Osteoarthritis of knee, replacement is the only surgery with good long term results. You may try any nationalized insurance to cover the expense. Other modalities like lubricant injections are not effective in advanced arthritis. Steroids can offer relief of 2-3 weeks, but with risk of infection.

I am experiencing painful cramps or spasm very often. For example, on arm, right side of chest, sides of the bocky etc. Every where, it can happen. What may be the reason and remedy?

DNB (Orthopaedics), Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho), MBBS

It may be due to myositis or simple myalgia. Get your ESR, CPK levels. If normal, consult a neurologist tp check for motor neuron disease.

My elbow is flexed partially and iam not able to stretch it fully beyond a certain point. There is a pain at the tip of the elbow, but no swelling and redness. When i throw the cricket ball, there is a severe pain at the tip of the elbow and after that i cannot extend it for sometimes.

There could be a biceps contracture or a joint capsule contracture associated with triceps tendinitis. Get your X ray & MRI; then meet an Orthopedic.

Rotator cuff tendinitis and Shoulder Impingement syndrome are common causes of Pain in Shoulder region. In resistant cases, MRI helps to evaluate the extent, or associated tear. Most cases can be managed satisfactorily with supervised physiotherapy; some cases require Intralesional injections. Rarely, Shoulder Arthroscopy is needed, esp if there is documented rotator cuff tear on MRI.

I have a back disc doctor has advised to take complete bed rest for 3 months but I am preparing for competitive exam which is not possible. is there any way so that I will be ok?

DNB (Orthopaedics), Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho), MBBS
Orthopedist, Gurgaon
The current philosophy of treating disc problems is to enforce strict bed rest for a week to 10 days,
