Hello. I am Dr. Ajay Mehta and I am working in the field of pediatrics from last 16 years and I have worked for many carpets hospitals in Delhi NCR and my own clinic is in south city, Gurgaon. I would like to tell you about some tips about taking care of infants and newborns. First of all, we will take about the vaccinations.

The vaccination schedules which is being described by a WHO or government of India that should be followed by each and every new born. Vaccination schedule includes BCG and polio drops, like hepatitis B at the birth. Then DPT, then injection polio and Rotavirus vaccine. Now a days, Rotavirus vaccine is also available in civil hospitals. So I want that every child should be vaccinated till the age of 15 years and because this decreases the amount of diseases prevailing in the society and the country. So the death rates in the newborns and infants can be decreased by giving them vaccinations.

Second thing I would like to highlight about the nutrition part after 6 months of age is whining food that should be proper nutritious healthy diet should be started with the liquid diet, then semi-solid and then solid food should be given that is also very important part in this period. The requirement of the child increase after the 6 months of age and I never endorse any packed food or any formula food which are available in the market. Proper healthy and good food, healthy nutritious food should be initiated at the age of 6 months. And that is necessary for the development and the growth of the baby.

8 Signs Your Kid Is Suffering From Bronchial Asthma!

The term asthma and bronchial asthma are often used interchangeably. Bronchial asthma refers to the chronic inflamation of the airways either due to some internal or environmental allergen. This leads to the narrowing of airways, which makes breathing difficult and blocks air from entering the lungs. Children are most affected by this condition as the immune system is still in the process of maturity and often grows out of it as they age. However, if not treated, this can lead to many complications like respiratory failure and can prove to be fatal. Asthma cases often spike in winter months and in the flowering season. It can also be triggered by second hand or passive smoke, stress, sudden unaccustomed physical exercise, food additives, dust, house mites, perfumes, certain drugs and many other allergens. A family history of asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and other allergic conditions can also increase a child’s risk of suffering from this condition.

Some of the most noticeable symptoms of bronchial asthma include:

1. Wheezing 
2. Shortness of breath 
3. Excessive coughing that worsens at night 
4. Tightness of the chest 
5. Lowered energy levels 
6. Rapid breathing 
7. Tiredness 
8. Indrawing of chest and lower neck

These symptoms often worsen after exercising. Lung function test and Chest X-ray are often used to confirm a diagnosis of bronchial asthma. Once diagnosis is being confirmed, it should be categorized as per severity. Your doctor may prescribe medication in the form of pills and inhalants as per the category of disease. It is important to note that these cannot cure asthma, but can help manage it. Inhalers deliver low doses of steroids directly to the lungs to reduce inflammation and other inhaled medication like Beta 2 agonist will open the airway by relaxing the muscles of airway. Children suffering from asthma must be taught how to use the inhalers and should always have it with them. In the case of school going children, their teachers should also be informed about the condition. Parents should also know how to keep it, use it and clean the device in a proper and hygienic way.

In very small kids those inhalational medication can be given by face mask and spacer, but as the age grows or in case of elder children above 6 years of age, they can directly take the medication from spacer. Those children who are already on inhalers, but still face asthma attack , for them nebuliser is the better choice to manage the emergency. It will make the liquid medicine into mist and enters into the air passage easily and work promptly.

In addition, certain lifestyle changes can also help reduce the frequency of asthmatic attacks. Avoid going outdoors on windy days or days when air pollutant level is high. Reduce the child’s exposure to allergens like pet hair, dander and dust by dusting and vacuuming on a weekly basis. Avoid the use of humidifiers inside your house as moist air can promote the infestation of dust mites. Try to keep the child in a room with adequate air and sunlight. Take plenty of green leafy vegetables and fruits, which contain lots of vitamins and minerals. If possible get your child to wear cover his or her nose and mouth while in outdoors.

He must be put on 3-4 anticonvulsants depending on type of epilepsy. You should be under guidance of pediatric neurologist. It may take some time but cause should be known for this.

How Much Sleep Does A Child Require?

Sleep is an essential part of a child's growth and development journey. Sleep helps the child develop both physically and mentally. Thus, it is important for every child to develop good sleeping habits. The amount of sleep a child requires varies from child to child and according to their age. Here's a broad guideline for how much sleep your child should be getting depending on their age.

Less than a year

The confusion between day and night ends when the baby is about 4 months old. This is when you will notice regular sleep patterns emerging. By the time they are 6 months old, most infants have a regular sleep and wake cycle. At this age, your baby needs at least 15 hours of sleep a day. The goal here is to establish healthy sleeping habits.

1-3 year old

After their first birthday, toddlers tend to reduce their number of day-time naps. But they still require 11-14 hours of sleep a day. Let your child take a 1-3 hour afternoon nap and put them to bed early, so that they can get a full night's sleep.

3-6 year old

Naps gradually become shorter as the child grows up. These pre-schoolers need 10-13 hours of sleep a day. At this age, it is a good idea to encourage your child to fall asleep on their own. They should no longer need an adult to put them to sleep. They should also learn to fall back asleep on their own, if they wake up in the middle of the night.

7-12 year old

A pre-teen needs 10-11 hours of sleep a day but the average sleep they get is about 9 hours. The challenge at this age is to not allow bedtime to get very late. Once they start going to school, children have a fixed time to wake up. Thus, a late bedtime will give them inadequate sleep.

12-18 year old

Teenagers require 8-9 hours of sleep a day. In no way should they get less than 7 hours of sleep. It is a good idea to keep the television and computer out of their bedroom. Also, avoid letting them have caffeinated drinks before sleeping.

Poor or inadequate sleep can lead to a number of health complications as well as mental disorders such as ADHD and cognitive problems. Thus, it is important for your child to not only follow a regular sleep schedule, but also to have restful sleep.
