 I am Dr. Gaurav, I am here to talk about fever. Now, fever can present with many symptoms. Fever in itself is one of the most common symptoms and it can occur alone without any other symptom. Or it can occur with symptoms like headache, nausea, throat pain, nasal congestion or vomiting, diahrrea, body ache, rashes. So it really depends on what kind of spectrum of symptoms fever presents with. Now, how often we go to the doctor? We often deal with the fever at home, we treat a fever with our own medicines or few people go to the chemists and they prescribe anti-biotics. Well, it’s a very wrong idea, the wrong idea, I am referring to not particularly at home, self-medication but obviously going to the chemist. Because chemist is not a doctor. I have often seen patients coming to me and they say we have taken this antibiotic from the chemist and we have taken this only for two days. So, let’s discuss an important sub-topic of anti-biotics in association with fever.

Anti-biotics have been prescribed according to the research and they have to be given according to the proper doses, you either start the anti-biotics and finish anti-biotics as per the suggested doses, like if it is given twice daily for seven days and you take it twice daily for only 3 days or say for 4 days and then you stop and next time you take that particular anti-biotic, it won’t work. You will get resistant to it, so it is very important, it is imperative that you go to the doctor and start the proper treatment according to the proper doses. Another issue is that people often think that getting a few tests done is irrelevant. Now why tests are so important? Because, simple tests like CBC, complete blood count, it reveals the number of finding cells of the body, the hemoglobin, the number of platelets. Now in a high-grade viral fever, not necessarily dengue, the number of platelets can suddenly drop within one day, so a doctor might ask you to repeat CBC or platelets the next day, and it is important because platelets below 30 or 25 thousand can cause extreme bleeding both internal or external. So it is important that we go to the clinic or to a hospital, show it to a doctor, get a thorough clinical examination done and treat the fever and the associated symptoms by a proper test and proper doses.
