Alcohol Consumption - Know Its Link With The Heart!

Alcohol Consumption - Know Its Link With The Heart!

When it comes to the effects of alcohol, the liver is the most talked about organ. However, this is not the only part of the body affected by alcohol. Alcohol can also affect your cardiovascular health. This effect is determined largely by the quantity of alcohol being consumed. In restricted amounts, alcohol can, in fact, be beneficial but in large amounts, it can be the cause of a number of heart health issues. Let’s take a look at both sides of the coin.

The Good
For women over the age of 45 years, drinking a small amount of certain types of alcohol such as red wine can be good for the heart. It protects the heart against damage to the arteries by increasing the good cholesterol levels. This prevents the narrowing of arteries by reducing the amount of fat deposited on the arterial walls. Good cholesterol also helps lower the level of bad cholesterol and fights against its ill effects.
Alcohol also reduces the ability of platelets to stick together by increasing the amount of fibrinogen produced by the liver. Thus, it prevents the formation of blood clots an in turn heart attacks caused by them.

The Not so Good
The ill effects of alcohol consumption overshadow its benefits. Drinking heavily over an extended period of time can increase your risk of heart disease. It increases blood pressure that can further trigger a stroke or heart attack. Alcoholism can also lead to weight gain that again causes an increase in blood pressure.

Excessive alcohol consumption also weakens the heart muscles. This condition is known as cardiomyopathy. As the heart muscles grow weaker, they cannot pump blood efficiently and the heart may fail and cause premature death.

Binge drinking can cause a condition known as Holiday Heart Syndrome. It is characterized by severe pain in the center of the chest, increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and breathlessness. It may make the person feel as though they were experiencing a heart attack. The term was coined as this condition was seen more commonly during the holiday season when people tend to drink more heavily.

Thus, if you want to enjoy a long, healthy life, avoid alcohol or drink in moderation. For women, this means one drink a day while for men; consumption should be limited to two drinks a day. If you have an existing heart condition or a history of strokes, alcohol should be avoided completely.

What food /drinks to take to avoid cholesterol. My cholesterol is borderline. I go for regular exercise and slim figure.

What food /drinks to take to avoid cholesterol. My cholesterol is borderline. I go for regular exercise and slim figure.
Dear lybrate-user, cholesterol in borderline, so here we have to check which one is high -ldl (low-density called “bad” cholesterol ,hdl (high-density lipoprotein), or “good” cholesterol. If ldl is high then it is bad cholesterol and not good for health, and if hdl is high then good cholesterol and need not worry. So food and drinks to be avoided are like junk foods, spicy foods, alcohol, bakery foods, and excess oil in curries to be reduced. Eat plenty of vegetables, salads, fruits, buttermilk, curd, milk, coconut water, lemon juice, garlic in food or raw. Exercise daily. Follow this diet 1) don't take tea empty stomach. Eat something like a banana (if you are not diabetic) or any seasonal fruit or soaked almonds and a glass of water first thing in the morning (within 10 mins of waking up). No only biscuits or rusk will not do. 2) take your breakfast every day. Don't skip it. 3). Have light meals every 2 hours (in addition to your breakfast, lunch n dinner) e.g. Cocnut water, a handful of dry fruits, a handful of peanuts, any fresh n seasonal fruit, a cup of curd/milk etc 4) finish your dinner at least 2 hours before going to sleep. 5) maintain active life style. This is most important n non negotiable part 6) avoid fast foods, spicy n fried foods, carbonated beverages 7) take a lot of green vegetables n fruit. 8) drink lot of water. 9) curd is good for u. 10) everyday preferably sleep on same time. For more details I suggest you to take an appointment so that we can discuss case in detail homeopathy has best treatment for these complaints, and restores liver.

If your bp is not under control when you are not taking telmisartan, you should definitely consider re-starting a medicine to reduce your bp.

My son age about 4.6 years, have done ultra scanning and found etopic in right kidney, what it's meaning.
Ectopic means at other place than normal. So your son's right kidney us not at normal position, it is at another area. Most of the times, nothing is needed to do for it. But it is important to consult an urologist with all the reports.

Hi I am 26 years old but you have blood pressure of 140/90 should I want to take medicine please suggest.
Dietary salt restriction is very important for hypertension. Avoid red meat and frequent intake of non-veg items and fast foods. Lead a stressfree healthy life with morning walk, pranayama and meditation with good sleeping hours. Besides taking all these measures, if bp goes on increasing, go for further consultation.

No. Not now if no diabetes. You must adopt healthy lifestyle, regular physical activities along with no added salt in diet. Review blood pressure after a month.
