Bowel Moment - What It Says About Your Health?

Bowel Moment - What It Says About Your Health?

Bowel movement is one of the most important clues about an individual’s health, as it gives a real idea of the gastrointestinal condition as well as overall health. One shall have to get familiar with the regular appearance of stool to spot the issues beforehand; however, the day to day alterations in the appearance does not mean that there is a problem with your health as one may notice short-term abnormalities based on what he or she is eating every day.

But in case an unexplained change lasts for over a week or so, it is a sign of some strange happening in the gastrointestinal tract.

  1. Hard pieces of faeces that are hard to pass: If the bowel movement is straining to pass, then the individual is constipated. Some people think that they are not suffering from constipation, but their stool is always hard and comes out in pieces rather than soft stool that passes out effortlessly. The most common reason behind such stool is a lack of fibre in the diet. According to general recommendations, an adult male must take at least 38 grams of fibre while an adult female must take about 25 grams of fibre. It is recommended to maintain a food journal to track the daily nutrients intake, and in case there is a lack of fibre in the diet, it can be stacked up with whole grains, fruits, beans and nuts.
  2. Black or bright red coloured poop: If the stool has a deep red appearance, it would indicate that a part of the bowel is bleeding. In most circumstances, the blood in the stool is caused by the benign haemorrhoids, but it could also be due to some ulcers in the colon or stomach or even cancer. That is why it is extremely crucial to bring it to the doctor’s notice. There are different types of over-the-counter medications which turn the stool into black colour. This sort of discolouration is entirely temporary and may stay along for a few days even after stopping the medicine.
  3. A loose stool which is not diarrhoea: Loose stool but not diarrhoea may mean that the individual is suffering from celiac disease. Although the illness is quite uncommon, most people who suffer from it are not aware of the condition. The appearance of the stool is the largest and most reliable signs of having celiac disease. Individuals affected with celiac disease are not able to tolerate gluten, and it destroys the villi in the lining of the small intestine. As a result, the nutrients are unabsorbed, and the stool becomes loose. Switching to a gluten-free diet for about 2 to 3 weeks can aid in alleviating the disease.

If the appearance of the stool remains abnormal for weeks together, it is important to talk to a doctor to find out if there is something serious underlying. Bowel movement is the truest sign of the intestinal health, and thus, should not be ignored.

Eating smaller meals more often may reduce the symptoms of both conditions, too. The reverse also can be true — attempting to release gas may trigger acid reflux. Belching both during and after meals to release air when the stomach is full is normal. To relieve acidity crush two pods of cardamom (with or without the skin), boil the powder in water and drink the cooled juice for instant relief. Pudina helpslower the acid content of the stomach and improves digestion. Has a cooling effect which helps reduce the pain and burning associated with acid reflux.

Exercise bahut heavy nahi krni chahiye. Khane k baad bilkul mat kijiye. Subah khali pet thoda yoga karke breakfast kha lijiye. Apko indigestion ki taklif lag rahi hai. Homeopathic davai se regular ho jayega.

Definition:   Presence of stones in the gallbladder is referred to as cholelithiasis.

PredisposingFactors:

  • Genetics , Gender (more in women)
  • Body weight (Obesity), or rapid loss in weight , Fasting
  • Decreased motility (movement) of the gallbladder
  • Diet
  • Drugs : Cholesterol / Lipid lowering drugs , Estrogen
  • Diseases: Diabetes, blood disorder (Hemolytic anemia etc.)

Composition of Gall Bladder Stone:

Cholesterol Stone: Found in western world, causes accounted to diet rich in cholesterol.

Pigmented stone: generally found in diseases related to blood disorder

Mixed stone: Contains Calcium, magnesium, sodium phosphate ( most common type found in Asian population (India).

Symptoms :

  • (70–85%) are asymptomatic or "Silent Gall Stone"
  • Pain in right upper and central part of abdomen (may radiate to inter-scapular region) mostly after half an hour of food (seen more symptomatic after a fatty diet.)
  • post meal fullness, belching, upper abdominal discomfort
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Clay colored stools or dark urine

Investigations required:

  • Blood - Liver Function test , Complete Blood Count,
  • Imaging -Ultrasound Of abdomen and if required MRI (MRCP) abdomen.
  • Complications of Gall Stone
  • Infection of gall bladder {Empyema(pus) / Mucocele of Gall bladder}
  • Perforation of gall bladder
  • Stone slipped in Common Bile Duct resulting in obstruction in the passage of bile leading to Jaundice
  • Stone from gall bladder slipped to common bile duct and entering into pancreatic duct through common channel of opening in Duodenum (small bowel) leading to Pancreatitis.

Indications for Surgery:

  • Symptomatic Gall stone with typical history of pain as mentioned above and proven with Imaging (ultrasound)
  • Asymptomatic or Silent gall stone (Found Incidentally during Ultrasound abdomen) - "DOES NOT REQUIRE SURGERY".

Asymptomatic or Silent gall stone requiring surgery in special circumstances are:

  • Pregnant lady diagnosed with gall stone during first trimester (incidental finding)
  • Any blood disorder and patient is going for any abdominal surgery for any reason.
  • Diabetes mellitus - as chances of infection are high on by ground of diabetes
  • Gall bladder polyp (a soft tissue growth in lumen of gall bladder) size > 1 cm or single stone measuring > 3 cms, as risk of Gall Bladder cancer increase by 10 fold in these cases.

Treatment: Surgery - Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Key Hole Surgery) is Gold standard worldwide.

  • Safe surgery, there are no side effects of removing of gall bladder as one has to weigh the complication arising from a "symptomatic" gall stone disease.
  • Can be done as a day care surgery
  • Post surgery patients are advised to refrain from fatty meal for a week so as to acclimatize the body to a diluted bile. Normal activity is allowed from day 1 of post surgery.

General Physician,
Are the Recurrent anal abcesses or fistula and frequent burping, the signs of Chohn' disease?
Crohn's disease can sometimes cause life-threatening complications. Crohn's disease can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss, anaemia and fatigue. Some people may be symptom-free most of their lives, while others can have severe chronic symptoms that never go away. Crohn's disease cannot be cured. Medications such as steroids and immunosuppressants are used to slow the progression of disease. If these aren't effective, a patient may require surgery. Additionally, patients with Crohn's disease may need to receive regular screening for colorectal cancer due to increased risk.Crohn's disease can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss, anaemia and fatigue. Some people may be symptom-free most of their lives, while others can have severe chronic symptoms that never go away.

First of all, any incidental finding of a gall stone is not an indication for surgery. Your stone size may not be 8-10 cms, which you have written, it would have 8-10 mm I feel. Asymptomatic gall stone should not be touched. If one is willing to go ahed of surgery, A Laparoscopic approach is gold standard. If in histopathology its, a cancer, then one will have to find out the limit of spread (thickness/layer of gall bladder involvement, depending upon next surgery needed.

Dear user. I can understand. Green stool or poop is a common stool color change. It may be due to bile pigment in the stool because diarrhea moves food too quickly thorough the intestine so the chemical can't break down, or the green color may be due to certain foods like green, leafy vegetables or green food coloring. Take care.
