In case of nonunion of femur fracture after 5-6 months of fixation with intramedullary nails n implant, what is further appropriate course of action (age 50)

Hi there There can be many factors responsible for non union of fracture like too large space for bony remodelling to bridge, Interposition of periosteum, muscle or cartilage, Bony site with limited or less blood supply and more. If fracture won't unite after 6 months it my be considered in as delayed or non union of fracture. These approaches can be effective after non union: Non-surgical approaches Early weight bearing and casting may be helpful for delayed union and non-union. Bone stimulation can sometimes be used. This delivers pulsed ultrasonic or electromagnetic waves to stimulate new bone formation. It needs to be used for up to an hour every day, and may take several weeks to be effective. Medical treatments such as teriparatide have also been used to promote fracture healing, particularly in patients with osteoporosis. Surgical approaches: Debridement to establish a healthy infection-free vascularity at the fracture site. Bone grafting to stimulate new callus formation. Bone may be taken from the patient or may be cadaveric. Bone graft substitutes/osteobiologics. Internal fixation to reduce and stabilise the fracture. Depending on the type of non-union, any combination of the above procedures.

My son is a patient of Muscular Dystrophy as per AIIMS, Delhi. I would like to know is there any treatment/medicines ...
Hi there There is no cure for muscular dystrophy. But medications and physiotherapy can help to manage symptoms and slow the course of the disease. Medicines prescribed can be Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, which can help improve muscle strength and delay the progression of certain types of muscular dystrophy. But prolonged use of these types of drugs can cause weight gain and weaken bones, increasing fracture risk and Heart medications, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or beta blockers, if muscular dystrophy damages the heart. Physiotherapy will help in maintain range of motion of joints by stretching and strengthening exercises, aerobic exercises to maintain strength, mobility and general health. Braces to avoid contractures and maintaining muscle length. There can be need of breathing assistance if respiratory muscles weaken, a sleep apnea device may help improve oxygen delivery during the night. For further medicinal advice contact neurologist and physiotherapist.

Hi there Back pain can be caused due to many reasons like sprain, strain, repetitive injury, heavy lifting, jerking movement and can be serious sometimes. I would suggest you to try ice pack for 15-20 minute 3 times/day and avoid heavy lifting, painful movements and do gentle low back rotation and extension exercises and abdominal exercise after ease in pain. If pain still persists after 3-4 days it would be better for you to visit an orthopedic doctor and have a x ray and MRI.

HI, My Father is getting blood in urine and also pain is there. Please suggest a solution for that?
Hi there Blood in urine is called as hematuria. In this your kidneys — or other parts of your urinary tract — allow blood cells to leak into urine. There can be different reasons leading to blood in urine like urinary tract infection, kidney infection, kidney stones, enlarged prostate. I would suggest you to consult a nephrologist for better diagnosis and further treatment. Ask your father to drink as much water as he can daily.

Bachelor in Physiotherapy

Hi there you can go for surgery for the removal of heel bone spurs. But fortunately, this is done very rare than in exception cases. Most cases can be resolved by physiotherapy treatment. At home you can do these few things like icing, rest, foot stretches and supporting the foot with a silicone heel pad or insole for shoe.

Hi there It can be because of plantar fascitis. Plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue (ligament) that connects your heel bone to your toes. It supports the arch of your foot. If you strain your plantar fascia, it gets weak, swollen, and irritated (inflamed). You can go for physiotherapy treatment for it. At home you can do certain things to get relief like contrast bath can be done for your heels. You can do stretching exercise of plantar fascia and use silicone heel pads or shoe insoles. Hope this will help you.
