What are mood swings?
Mood swings are defined as sudden and abrupt changes in mood. These mood swings can sometimes help promote problem solving abilities, but a stronger form of these can be associated to a more complex disorder namely, bipolar disorder that is characterised by the cyclical shift from manic to depressive and vice versa.
What causes mood swings?
There are several things that can trigger mood swings starting from your brain chemistry to substance abuse. The most common cause of moods swings can be-
- Abnormal levels of neurotransmitters (NTs) in the brain (ex. Serotonin is majorly responsible for change in moods, changes in emotional state and sleep)
- Anabolic steroid abuse
- Borderline personality Disorder
- Autism or other pervasive developmental disorders
- Premenstrual Syndrome
- Major depression
- Post traumatic stress disorder
How to deal with mood swings?
Mood swings can make life difficult for yourself and those around you as well. It is advisable to keep your mood swings under control in order to get along with your life normally.
- Try to remain positive: May be you have had a string of heartbreaks off late or failed interviews, but do not let that define a trend in your life. This can lead to depression and make you upset. Keep your mind open to other possibilities and never lose hope. Hope is something that keeps one going; it gives someone a purpose in life.
- Balance your life: Learn to maintain a balance between work and leisure. Don’t make your life all about work, take small breaks to do what you like (perhaps read a book, or play an instrument).
- Accept the grey in your life: “Life is like a box of chocolates”. You will never know what comes your way. It is never just black and white. Learn to accept that life can go a little downhill sometimes, but don’t be too alarmed by that. Enjoy the best and always keep yourself prepared for the worse.
- Learn to laugh: Enjoy and appreciate the little things around you. It might surprise you, if you consciously look around with an open mind, you will see the miniscule things that may make you laugh. Maybe that neighbour you find annoying is actually a fun guy to be with or that aunty who is always badgering you with questions is actually concerned about you. And most of all learn how to laugh at yourself! People have made a career over doing that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. You are more fun than you expected to be.
The period around the age of 45 to 50 is very delicate for most women as many changes occur within the body. The changes occur due to menopause or a cessation of the menstrual cycle for a period of at least 12 months or so. Along with a host of physical changes, post-menopausal women tend to suffer from mental problems as well. Some of the factors could be physical changes such as a decline or stop in hormone productions while some of them are psychological effects as well. Some of the common mental problems faced by women are mentioned below:
Depression: This is by far the most common mental disorder and affects women while they are going through the process of menopause. After a few years, post-menopausal women tend to recover from this or the symptoms at least taper off. It is estimated that almost 20% of women undergoing menopause suffer from this problem, although the risk of depression is much higher if you have prior history of it.
Sleep Disorders: This can be described as not only a mental disorder that affects women but also a symptom of menopause. Sleep disorders can range anywhere between disturbed sleep, insomnia or sleep apnea (breathing difficulty while sleeping), especially in older women. Women undergoing menopause may suffer from this due to hormonal changes which result in hot flashes. These can wake you up in the middle of the night almost daily.
Schizophrenia: This is a serious mental disorder and is mostly noticed in women who have a prior history of the disorder. This condition is characterized by delusions and a detachment from reality which often pushes the person to act on their inappropriate imaginations. Schizophrenia usually manifests itself in young adulthood and peaks again at the age of around 45 to 50. If you had episodes of schizophrenia in your early adulthood, then it may resurface during menopause, although most women do see a subsiding of symptoms some time after menopause has occurred.
Panic Disorder: Women tend to experience this problem, during or even after menopause, as a new disorder that suddenly develops. This can be quite disruptive in your life. Also, if you have a history of this disorder, menopause may trigger it to show up again.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: This disorder is another mental health issue that can cause you to be overly obsessive, more so among menopausal women. If you already have had OCD in the past, menopause can trigger a relapse or a bad episode.
Bipolar Disorder: In this case as well, menopausal women have a higher tendency for a relapse or the start of a bad episode if they already had even mild signs of it.

Symptoms of postpartum depression
- Depressed mood: You feel low, unhappy and tearful.
- Irritability: You may get irritable or angry with your family, baby or other children.
- Tiredness: All new mothers get pretty tired. Depression can make you feel utterly exhausted.
- Sleeplessness: Even though you are tired, you can't fall asleep. You may lie awake worrying about things.
- Inability to enjoy anything: You find that you can't enjoy or be interested in anything. You may not even enjoy being with your baby.
- Loss of interest in sex: Negative and guilty thoughts
Depression changes your thinking:
- You may have very negative thoughts
- You might think that you are not a good mother
- Or that your baby doesn't love you
- You may feel guilty for feeling like this.
Most new mothers worry about their babies' health. You may worry that:
- Your baby is very ill
- Your baby is not putting on enough weight
- Your baby is crying too much
- Your baby is too quiet and might have stopped breathing
- You might harm your baby
When you feel anxious, you may have the following:
- Racing pulse
- Thumping heart
- Fear that you may have a heart attack or collapse.
- You may not want to see friends and family.
- You may feel that things will never get better, that life is not worth living.
- Thoughts of suicide
ED is a very common condition in males. It is characterized by either insufficient erection defined as ability to achieve vaginal penetration. Avoidant personality disorder is a psychological condition wherein, one feels extremely shy. Becoming overly sensitive to rejection and developing feelings of inadequacy are common signs of this disorder. This disorder can lead to problems in your work life and relationships.
With APD, the commonly surfacing symptoms would include disapproval and disregard of situations and people, rejection and embarrassment. It generally gets very difficult for the one to get acquainted with new people and form intimate relationships. The exact cause of APD has not been established yet. It is believed that environmental and genetic factors play a role in this disorder. People who are inherently shy and reserved are usually prone to developing this psychological anomaly.
How do you treat APD?

- Psychotherapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy is a treatment option for APD wherein, the doctor counsels on how to change one’s thinking patterns and thought process, thus, influencing his/her actions.
- Psychodynamic psychotherapy: Psychodynamic therapy involves you becoming aware of the unconscious thoughts. It helps you figure out how your past experiences frame your behavior. Your past emotional pains can be resolved with this technique so that you can move ahead with your life.
- Medications: Anti-depressant medications used to treat depression and anxiety can be used to treat APD.

OCD stands for obsessive compulsive disorder.
Obsessions are repetitive thoughts, ideas, images which the person knows are wrong but cannot stop them resulting in marked anxiety and unease.
Compulsions are repetitive acts either imaginary or physical done in response to an obsession eg repetitive hand washing, cleaning, detail to symmetry, hoarding etc.
Many factors might play a part:
Ocd is sometimes inherited, so it can run in the family. Stressful life events bring it on in about one in three cases. Life changes - when you have to take on more responsibility, such as puberty, the birth of a child, or a new job, if you have ocd for a long time, some experts think that an imbalance of a brain chemical called'serotonin' (also known as 5ht) may be involved. You are a neat, meticulous, methodical person – but go too far. If you have particularly high standards of morality and responsibility, you may feel bad when you have unpleasant thoughts. So, you watch out for them – which makes them more likely to happen.
Marijuana or herbal cannabis is derived from the bhang plant. Hashish is a more potent form and comes as resin.
Recreational use of marijuana in colleges is at an all time high. Majority of young people use it for it's relaxing abilities and the high that comes with use.
Unfortunately for quite a few youngster's it brings on strong anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia incl. Hallucinations and other perceptual abnormalities.
Causes of depression:
Depression is a very common condition. The who estimates that 10-15 percent of the population suffers from it. Females are twice as much prone to depression then males.
What causes depression?
There are many reasons, the common ones are
- genetics: Multiple genes rather than one are implicated. People with a family history i. E parents, close relatives or siblings with depression increase one's vulnerability to depression.
- brain chemistry: Various neurochemicals incl. Serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine etc are involved. Antidepressants act by correcting these neurochemical imbalances.
- stressful life events: These increase one's vulnerability. Stress leads to increased cortisol levels which in turn increases the risk.
- hormonal imbalance: Various hormonal imbalances eg hypothyroidism, hypercortisolism, female hormonal imbalances cause depression. Perhaps that is one of the reasons for females to be more prone eg around periods, pregnancy and childbirth, perimenopausal states etc.
- personality: People who are shy, anxious, perfectionist, introverted are more prone to depression.
- nutritional deficiencies: Vitamin deficiencies like vitamin d and particularly omega 3 fatty acid deficiencies increase the risk of depression.
- drugs and alcohol: Eg marijuana use, alcoholism.
- medications: Eg beta blockers, steroids
- stressful life events: Eg stress at work, in interpersonal/family life and especially an unhappy childhood increase the risk of depression.
