4 Reasons to Opt for Lasik

MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist
Ask Free Question
LASIK helps patients who are suffering from near-sightedness (Myopia), far sightedness (Hypermetropia) and even astigmatism (cylindrical power in glasses).

This procedure aims at correcting the shape of the cornea, which is the transparent layer that lines the front of the eye. Through this procedure, the cornea is reshaped so that the retina receives a focused light.

This surgical procedure is ideal for people having following conditions, making spectacle use mandatory:
1. Myopia or nearsightedness - Far off objects appears blurry
2. Hypermetropia or farsightedness - Close objects appear indistinct
3. Astigmatism - Overall fuzzy vision

Why LASIK is popular for vision correction?

1. It helps people to get rid of Glasses and contact lenses, which sometimes are cosmetically unacceptable and in some cases are visually disabling.

2. Quick results and recovery: This surgery enables you to return to your normal schedule immediately the day after the surgery. You can have clear and improved vision within a day.

3. Adjustments can be made years later to alter the vision as per growing impairment in the future and advancing years.

4. Improved vision: A study reveals that 95% of the people who underwent this surgery achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 and 85% of the people achieved 20/20 vision. This procedure ensures that a patient achieves enhanced vision.

Headache persisting for 6 years is highly disturbing. Is there any thing which triggers headache. With normal ct report no serious or life threatening disease is there. How many hours you are in front of screens like computers or mobile or tv. You should get eye checked for any glasses. If headache is associated with giddiness or nausea you may be having migraine, thanks.

Eye Redness and Why It Happens

MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS

Ask Free Question
While red bloodshot eyes may look worrisome at first sight, it is not a cause of concern all the time. There are benign, short-lasting bouts that will disappear on their own to serious medical reasons that could require intervention. Listed below are some common causes and ways to manage red eyes.

Conjunctivitis: The most common cause of red or pink eye is a conjunctivitis infection of the membrane covering the sclera. The blood vessels are irritated and give the eye a red hue. This is contagious and very common in children, needs to be treated with antibiotic drops based on the cause.

Allergy: Be it pollen, dust, dander, or some other chemicals, eyes could be sensitive to it and get inflamed and take on a red color. This can be treated with a combination of prevention by avoiding exposure to the allergen (which causes the allergy) and some antihistamine drops if required.

Contact lenses: Extended or improper use of contact lenses is the main reason for red eyes in contact lens users. There is reduced lubrication, increased accumulation of dust and microbes if the lens is not removed at frequent intervals. Removal of the lens and visits to the doctor are important things for managing it.

Computer Vision Syndrome: With people spending a large amount of time staring at computer screens, tablets and phone screens, the dryness in the eyes increase, thereby, leading to red eyes. The reduced blinking when working on computers also affects the condition. It is therefore very important to take conscious breaks to stare away from the monitors and use special glasses if required. In some cases, eye drops may also be required.

Occupational Hazard: For people working outdoors, conditions such as dust, heat, smoke, and dry air increase the chances of red eyes. Reducing exposure as much as possible and use of protective eyewear is extremely essential.

Dry Eye Syndrome: The tear glands are a constant source of lubrication for the eyes and also cleanse the eyes from the minute dust particles and other irritants. For various reasons, the tears produced may not be sufficient and can lead to red eyes. Artificial tear substitute could be used for managing this.

Some benign reasons like swimming, smoking, lack of sleep, pregnancy, common cold also produce bloodshot eyes. On the other hand, corneal ulcer, uveitis, ocular herpes, glaucoma, and other medical conditions could also lead to red eyes.

If it persists for more than 2 days, is painful, and is associated with discharge or sensitivity to light, it is important to seek medical help, especially if associated with injury or trauma.

What makes you Long-sighted? Causes You Need to Know About

Causes and Symptoms of Hypermetropia You Need to Know About

Hypermetropia, commonly known as long-sightedness, is a common vision condition in which distant objects appear clear, but nearby objects seem blurry or foggy. A person's ability to focus is greatly dependent on the degree of farsightedness. This condition of the eye is usually observed at birth and is also hereditary to some extent. Although, contact lenses and eye glasses are common methods of treatment, surgeries are also an option.

Before getting to understand the causes one should be aware of the structure of the eye.

The eye has two parts that focus on images

- The clear surface at the front of the eye known as the cornea

- The second part is the lens, which is a clear structure

In a normal eye, these clear surfaces have a smooth curvature. The cornea and the lens bend or refract the incoming light to direct a sharply focused image on the retina, situated at the back of your eye.

Hypermetropia is caused when

- The cornea or lens in the eye is not even or smoothly curved. In such cases, light rays are focussed behind retina which gives a blurry vision.

- The condition can also occur when the cornea of the eye is not curved enough. A shorter than the normal eye can also lead to such a condition. Convergent squint with eyes turning in is common in hypermetropes.

Due to these factors, the image is not precisely focused on the retina, causing blurry vision for nearby objects.

Some of the symptoms of farsightedness include:

- Objects that are close may appear blurry or cloudy

- Squinting the eyes might be necessary for viewing clearly

- A person may experience strain in the eye, aching and even inflammation in and around the eye

- Prolonged periods of close task like reading, writing or drawing may cause discomfort in the eye or minor headaches

Chronic eye strain and cross eyes are some of the commonly observed complications.

Why more percent of children need spectacles in each successive generations??

MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist
Ask Free Question
We as human children are born with +4.00d power. This eye power helps us in better vision for distance and is essential for survival for both hunting and hunted animals to survive on earth. We have binocular vision meaning both eyes used together for focusing that give us depth sense. Thus, we are born hunters in order to survive on this earth.

But by evolution came agriculture to sustain us. Now we send our young toddlers to school at 3 years of age. Excelling at studies remain the aim. So nature improves our near vision. In the process our distance vision get blurry and we require minus power to look at the distance. Hence, in each successive generations population of myopia (minus power) is increasing.

My eyes are so weak what can i do?
Better are glasses. They are away from your eyes. Most of your age spend long hours on screen. So use anti glare coating on your glasses. If you're cosmetically concerned then laser or icl will be a better option than contact lenses.
