About Valprid Syrup

Valprid Syrup is a drug that aids in the control of seizures in patients who suffer from epilepsy. The drug is an anticonvulsant, and effectively increases a certain type of brain chemical that control some seizures. The drug may also be used to treat other conditions as per the doctor’s guidance.

Valprid Syrup is meant for oral consumption and can be taken before or with a meal. It is generally advised that the drug should not be taken with carbonated drinks, as irritation in the throat may occur. The dosage of the drug is primarily dependent on the patient’s age, health, weight and severity of the condition. In case you are taking Valprid Syrup to control seizures do not stop it suddenly. It is advised that the drug should be discontinued gradually, so as to prevent any complications.

Valprid Syrup use can lead to some side effects which include- dizziness, hair loss, tremor, diarrhea, changed in weight and blurred or double vision. These side effects stop gradually, but in case any of them continue or tend to worsen seek medical help immediately. A few patients may also experience mood swings and undergo depression resulting in suicidal thoughts. In this case family members should be well aware of such a side effect to take care of the patient. In case of over dosage of the drug seek immediate medical help. Symptoms of over dosage can include coma, irregular heart rate and extreme drowsiness.

In case of adults the doctor may prescribe a dosage ranging from 1000mg to 2000mg on a daily bases. Very low doses of Valprid Syrup are prescribed to children that may vary from 25mg to 30mg. An allergic reaction is very rare to this drug but may occur, resulting in a rash or chest pain along with shortness of breath. Seek medical help in this case.

    • Epilepsy

      Valprid Syrup treats Epilepsy which is a brain disorder that causes repeated seizures. Uncontrolled jerking movements and loss of consciousness are some of the symptoms of Epilepsy.

    • Mania

      It cures mania which is a mental disorder characterized by hyperactivity and racing thoughts.

    • Migraine Prophylaxis

      This syrup helps in treating prophylaxis in migraine headaches characterized by severe headache, eye pain, nausea, and vomiting.

    • Allergy

      Do not take this medication if you have a known allergy to Valprid Syrup.

    • Liver Disease

      Do not take if you have any liver injury or a family history of liver injury.

    • Urea Cycle Disorders

      Do not use in patients with urea cycle disorder (high ammonium levels in the blood) or family history of urea cycle disorder.

    • Mitochondrial Disorders

      Do not use in patients and in children who are suspected to have the mitochondrial disorder (POLG e.g Alpers-Huttenlocher Syndrome).

        Alcohol

        Consumption of alcohol with this medicine is not recommended as it increases the risk of side effects like dizziness, difficulty in concentration. Do not perform activities that require mental alertness like driving or operating machinery.

        Lamotrigine

        Valprid Syrup may increase the concentration of lamotrigine and can cause serious skin reactions. Frequent monitoring of undesired effects like skin rash, seizures, tremors is necessary. Suitable dose adjustments or an alternate medicine should be considered based under the doctor's supervision.

        Metoclopramide

        Use of Valprid Syrup with metoclopramide should be avoided if possible. Do not operate heavy machinery if you are using these medicines. Suitable dose adjustments or an alternate medicine should be considered based on the clinical condition under the doctor's supervision.

        Warfarin

        Valprid Syrup should be given with caution in patients with warfarin or other anticoagulants as this combination may increase the risk of bleeding. Frequent monitoring of blood cells count and prothrombin time is necessary. Suitable dose adjustments or an alternate medicine should be considered based on the clinical condition under the doctor's supervision.

        Ethinyl Estradiol

        The desired effect of Valprid Syrup will not be observed if taken with oral contraceptives. Inform the doctor if you are receiving either of the medications.         Imipenem

        Use of these medicines is not recommended as it increases the concentration of Valprid Syrup. An alternate medicine should be considered based on the clinical condition under the doctor's supervision.
      • Interaction with Disease

        Depression

        Valprid Syrup should be given with caution in the patients with depression and suicidal thoughts. Frequent monitoring of depression symptoms is necessary. Dose adjustments are to be made based on the outcomes in the patient.

        Liver Disease

        Valprid Syrup is not recommended in patients with liver injury or a family history of liver injury. This risk is more in children less than 2 years of age. Liver function tests are to be performed before starting the treatment. Discontinue the medicine if any abnormality is identified.
