    How does this medication work?

This medication works following the dual mechanism. Firstly, it activates the ATP sensitive potassium channel, leading to vascular smooth muscle hyperpolarization. Secondly, it triggers guanylate cyclase to enhance the production of cyclic GMP, thereby activating protein kinase G. Therefore, GTPase RhoA is inhibited and Rho-kinase activity is decreased. As a result, the myosin phosphatase activity is accelerated and the calcium sensitivity of the smooth muscle is reduced. Owing to its nitrate property, nicorandil works as a vasodilator.
