About Galantamine

Galantamine is used in the treatment of mild to moderate vascular dementia which includes symptoms such as impairment of memory or judgment, changes in personality, abstract thinking in patients with Alzheimer disease.

It is a cholinesterase inhibitor which means that it works by increasing the production of a certain substance which is acetylcholine in the brain and helps in reducing symptoms of dementia in patients with Alzheimer disease. It should not be administered to patients if you have severe liver or kidney problems.

The side effects include hallucination, dizziness, tremor, headache, seizures, etc. When you begin your treatment, the doctor will increase your dosage slowly over the course of several months. It is advised to get medical help immediately if you see signs like red, blistered, swollen or peeling skin sometimes with or without a fever, red or irritated eyes or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, or eyes.

    How does this medication work?

    Galantamine is a reversible, competitive inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. It reversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase, preventing hydrolysis of acetylcholine causing an increase in acetylcholine concentration synapses. This medication also allosterically binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and is considered to facilitate agonists at these receptors.
