The idea is to intake protein. Now how you do it, we leave that up to you. Water is a very important factor in any weight reduction program. Consumption of water cleanses the toxins from the body in the form of urine. Drink about 4 to 5 liters of water every day different bodies have different requirements of water. A simple way to track how many liters of water your body needs in a day is to divide your weight by 20. The result you will get from this equation will give you the liters of water you must consume every day. For example: if you weigh 70 kilos, then dividing it by 20 gives 3.5 as result. So you must drink a minimum of 3.5 liters of water every single day. This is an essential step for weight loss in 10 days. Sleep Deprivation Can Cause High Blood Pressure Is Your Sleep Deprivation Causing High Blood Pressure?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Is Sleep Linked to Hypertension?

The link between sleep and hypertension is well-known. Studies have examined the effects of sleep deprivation on healthy volunteers and have examined the sleep patterns of people with hypertension, producing data that suggest adequate sleep may reduce risk. good cardiovascular health. Data from several studies show that people who sleep less than six hours each night are 20% more likely to develop high blood pressure. One night of inadequate sleep in patients with hypertension has been shown to result in elevated blood pressure throughout the next day.

Average sleep times have declined

Our modern society runs 24 hours a day, and many of us curtail sleep time to keep up. From an average sleep duration of 8 to 9 hours in 1960, our national sleep duration has dropped to 6.9 to 7 hours. Many people try to get by on five to six hours of sleep nightly, a habit that may be contributing to serious long-term health conditions.

What happens when you sleep?

Sleep is restorative, most people agree. We usually don’t question why, but the fact is that the circadian rhythms of sleep regulate our nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, two critical body systems that keep our bodies in healthy balance. During sleep, normal people should experience a drop in blood pressure of about 15 points, on average. This reduces the work of your heart.

The Autonomic Nervous System and “Fight or Flight” Response

Sleep regulates the autonomic nervous system, that part of the nervous system that modulates the “fight or flight response.” This evolutionary response causes changes in many bodily functions that at one time were useful to provide an edge against predators.A constant state of preparedness from inappropriate activation of this response results in harmful stress on the body.

When the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated, blood vessels are constricted to deliver blood to vital organs like the brain and heart, increasing blood pressure. The “fight or flight” response is also associated with changes in glucose metabolism and an increased risk of insulin-resistant diabetes.

Cortisol, Adrenaline, and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis

The primary hormones regulated by the pituitary and hypothalamus during sleep are adrenaline and cortisol, released by the adrenal gland. Adrenaline is a potent hormone that has a direct effect on blood pressure, mediated by constriction of the arteries. When your adrenaline levels remain high during the night, it can result in sustained hypertension.

Cortisol is a “stress hormone” that is highest in the morning and reaches a nadir between midnight and four AM. Lack of sleep can result in significant disruption of the cycle, subjecting your body to unnecessary stress responses and fatigue that are as damaging to your health as poor diet or lack of exercise.

When you awaken in the morning, your body typically experiences a 50% rise in cortisol level as your body prepares for the stress of a new day. Studies show that waking up early in the morning increases the cortisol response, an effect that is pronounced in people who are facing chronic stress and worry. Cortisol levels usually decline throughout the day, but in people who suffer from sleep loss, cortisol levels increase in the early evening, preventing natural recovery from the day and preparation for a restful night. In addition to lowered immunity, impaired glucose tolerance, and increased craving for carbohydrates, sleep deprivation is associated with elevated estrogen levels, decreased alertness, and poor concentration.

Sleep and Thyroid Hormone

Sleep loss also increases the amount of thyroid hormone in people who are not getting enough rest. People with elevated thyroid hormone have both increased blood pressure and cardiac output, putting unneeded stress on the heart.

Sleep, Obesity, and Hypertension

Sleep deprivation increases appetite by disturbing the regulation of leptin and ghrelin, two hormones that modulate appetite. Sleep deprivation alters your body’s ability to regulate the need for calories, resulting in over-eating and obesity, also linked to increased risk of hypertension.

Caffeine and Hypertension

Many of us use caffeine to remain alert when we haven’t slept well, a habit that causes dramatic increases in blood pressure. The mechanism for elevation of blood pressure after drinking a caffeinated beverage is not completely understood. Some researchers think caffeine may stimulate the adrenal gland to release adrenaline, a hormone with direct effects on blood pressure. It may block hormones that keep the arteries relaxed.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

People who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have multiple episodes during the night in which they stop and restart breathing. This disorder usually affects middle-age to older adults, but it can occur in patients of any age, particularly people who are overweight. People with OSA typically have high blood pressure, particularly on awakening, when their blood pressure should be at its lowest point. Symptoms of OSA include daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, morning headache, and difficulty concentrating during the day. They may be observed gasping suddenly during the night before returning to sleep.

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Sleep is critical for maintenance of your health. If you work shifts or curtail your sleep to accomplish multiple tasks, you are at risk for hypertension that can be difficult to treat. Measure your blood pressure in the morning. It should be at its lowest level and if it’s elevated, you should see your doctor in addition to consideration of lifestyle changes to prevent progression of medical problems associated with hypertension and sleeplessness. If you have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, there are effective treatments available.

Repeat this exercise 5-8 times in morning. *sit on the floor, stretch you legs together so that both foot touch each other. Now raise your arms upwards together with back straight, now move your hands towardstoes of feet and touch them. Your forehead touching your knees. Slowly revert back the arms and move back arms in normal position. Repeat this exercise 2-4 times daily. You can privately consult me for understanding more exercises. 2. Take 300 ml of rich cream milk, 200 gm of cheese and 2-3 eggs regularly. It will definitely give boost to your bone growth. 3. Hi. I have an ACL tear. I want to know if surgery is the only solution or it can be healed with medicines.
Surgery should be done. This is done to avoid degenerative effects on your knee , usually patients with ACL rupture have osteoarthritis - after 10 yrs of acl rupture. osteoartritis of the knee at an early age also will require a major surgery , so to avoid that - you should regain strength of your knee by doing an ACl ligament reconstruction and protect your knee from osteoarthritis. Hope this answers your query.

Exfoliative Dermatitis (Peeling of Skin) - Can it Be Treated?

MBBS, Diploma In Dermatology And Venerology And Leprosy (DDVL), Diploma in Venerology & Dermatology (DVD)
Dermatologist, Nanded
Exfoliative Dermatitis (Peeling of Skin) - Can it Be Treated?

The term exfoliative dermatitis literally means peeling or shedding of the skin. It is also known as erythroderma. This condition is characterized by the reddening and peeling away of large patches of skin all over the body. The skin may also turn rough and scaly and feel painful or itchy. Exfoliative dermatitis is caused by a skin cell disorder, which causes a rapid turnover in skin cells. People suffering from chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, autoimmune diseases, eczema and seborrheic dermatitis are at a high risk of suffering from this condition.

Apart from affecting a person’s appearance, the shedding of skin cells can also cause dehydration and nutritional deficiencies especially of protein and vitamin A and D. The loss of skin cells also makes you vulnerable to serious infections and damage to muscles and bones. It can also lead to hair loss and thickening of nails. Thus it is important to treat this condition as early as possible.
Treatment for this condition depends on a number of factors including the patient’s age, overall health, tolerance to specific types of medication and procedures and extent of reaction. When treating this disease, it is important to identify the root cause as it resists treatment until the root cause has been treated. To do this, a skin biopsy may be needed along with a physical examination and blood tests.

Patients suffering from acute exfoliative dermatitis may also require hospitalization. Hospitalization may also be suggested for elderly patients or people living alone. This is in cases where the condition has affected the patient’s fluid levels and internal body temperature. Emergency treatment can include:

  • Discontinuation of medications that may be causing this condition as a side effect
  • Application of petroleum jelly on the affected area to reduce fluid loss and prevent secondary infections
  • Non adherent dressing of the affected areas if the skin is crusting or weeping
  • Correction of body temperature through cooling baths or heated blankets
  • Antibiotics and intravenous fluids to combat dehydration

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist and ask a free question.

My father is over 45 and is an active smoker. Recently I have noticed that he coughs (dry) frequently, does this means that he has cancer developing in him? Please tell whether its a symptom or not.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The dry cough is an effect of excessive smoking. Instead of speculating about the chances of cancer, it is better for him to go for diagnostic testing and ascertain for sure that your concerns are justified. But with BP problems as baggage, he has a far greater concern with harming his heart and other parts of his body. He is well-advised to quit smoking now and if he needs professional help, even admission into a rehabilitation center it is well worth it. In the meantime let him follow these measures, where he will require the entire family's support without any harassment: Ideally that person must want to stop too. There are however things that you can do to help them. It is never too late to change. The habit can be very difficult to halt because of the many conditions attached to smoking. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But the desire to want to stop is the most important factor. Then at the times he is inclined to smoke, you can all distract him with something interesting to do including going out. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to give that person a reason that alarms him about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So he must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for him. In fact it is highly toxic too. He will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. He should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time he feels like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. He may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. He may also join Smokers Anonymous in his city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. He must keep himself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. He needs to keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all he should announce it to everyone that he has quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if he accidentally/willfully takes a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – he can start the cessation all over again. He must persevere with the best support until he defeats this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. You must be able to encourage him without nagging him.

Which paste shall I use to remove the yellow colour on my teeth? Present I use the colgate.

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist,
Which paste shall I use to remove the yellow colour on my teeth? Present I use the colgate.
The colour of your teeth is an optical phenomenon. It depends on the thickness of the enamel. The inner layer of the tooth is called dentin, which is yellow in colour. If the overlying enamel is thin the colour of dentin is visible through the enamel giving the tooth yellow colour. I the enamel is thick the underlying dentin is not visible so tooth appears white. The whiteness of tooth depends on the thickness of enamel. Genetic also plays a role. Usually a fair complexioned person will have yellow shade and a dark complexioned person will have white shade. Kindly consult a dentist he may restore the top yellow layer with lighter shade veneers or composite resins. If the teeth have become yellow recently it can be due to plaque attached over the teeth, a cleaning would be fine. Paste usually contains abrasives which gives polishing to the tooth, it cant change the colour.
