The condition in which there is an inflammation of the pharynx found at the back of the throat is referred to as Pharyngitis. It is a condition where one experiences extreme pain in the back of the neck followed with trouble swallowing. In other cases, the patient can also experience a lot of cough, loss of voice, hoarseness and even itching in the area.
HOW IS PHARYNGITIS DIAGNOSED?
The doctor will check temperature and examine the throat, sinuses, ears, nose, lungs, and neck, including feeling for swollen lymph nodes that may indicate strep throat. He may take a throat culture or do a rapid strep test by taking a swab from the throat. The health care provider may also order a blood test to check for mononucleosis.
HOW IS PHARYNGITIS TREATED?
In some cases, medical treatment is necessary for pharyngitis. This is especially the case if it’s caused by a bacterial infection. For such instances, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics. If a virus is causing your pharyngitis, home care can help relieve symptoms. Home care includes:
• drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
• eating warm broth
• gargling with warm salt water (1 tsp. salt per 8 oz. water)
• using a humidifier
• resting until you feel better
