CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKEMIA
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects your blood cells and bone marrow. It usually occurs during middle age or even older. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia occurs in three stages: chronic, accelerated and blastic. Chronic phase usually occurs without any symptoms. The accelerated phase presents the following symptoms:
• Develop bruises
• Fever and night sweats
• Weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Pain in bone
The blastic stage is the last stage with symptoms like infections, bleeding, swollen glands and skin changes such as bumps and tumours.
HOW IS CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKEMIA DIAGNOSED?
The doctor may do more tests to confirm the diagnosis, such as
• Physical and medical test
• Complete blood count.
• Bone marrow test
• FISH test (fluorescence in situ hybridization).
• Ultrasound or CT scans.
• Polymerase chain reaction test
HOW IS CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKEMIA TREATED?
The only curative treatment for Chronic myeloid leukemia is a bone marrow transplant or an allogeneic stem cell transplant. Other than this four major mainstays of treatment are done: Treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, myelosuppressive or leukopheresis therapy, splenectomy and interferon alfa 2b treatment

Leukaemia is different from other types of cancer that start in organs such as the lungs, colon, or breast and then spread to the bone marrow. Cancers that start elsewhere and then spread to the bone marrow are not leukaemia.
