This disease is contracted from undercooked meat of infected animals, close contact with secretions and unpasteurized milk. Common symptoms are:
• Muscular pain and sweating
• Migratory arthralgia
• Anemia and leukopenia
• Abdominal pain
• Poor appetite and weight loss
HOW IS BRUCELLOSIS DIAGNOSED?
A general physician may test for brucellosis if there is unexplained flu like symptoms. Testing may include:
1. blood culture
2. urine culture
3. bone marrow culture
4. cerebrospinal fluid testing
5. testing for antibodies to brucellosis
HOW IS BRUCELLOSIS TREATED?
Brucellosis is usually treated with antibiotics and medicines for almost 6 weeks. The symptoms may come and go for years. Also, the illness can come back after a long period of not having symptoms.
