Broken Tooth is usually caused by trauma, from biting down into something or receiving a hard blow on the face. Tooth may also break due to decay. Broken tooth may range from a minor chipping off the tooth to the entire tooth being knocked away. Symptoms of broken tooth are minor chipping of the tooth; complete breaking of tooth, sometimes accompanied by pain or bleeding gums. Cracked tooth is another case of broken tooth in which there is incomplete fracture of the dentine.
HOW IS BROKEN TOOTH DIAGNOSED?
Dentists may diagnose broken tooth through physical examination. For confirming the extent of breakage, a tooth X-ray may be taken.
HOW IS BROKEN TOOTH TREATED?
The treatment for broken tooth is based on the severity of the break. A tooth filling is used to fix breaks to the outer part of the tooth (the enamel). A dental filling may be used for a more serious break involving the enamel and inner layer of the tooth (dentin), but often a dental crown is necessary in these cases. The most serious breaks are those that damage a tooth's nerve. These usually require a root canal to remove the damaged nerve and blood vessels.

A root canal also removes the dead pulp left by a broken tooth so that it does not decay.
